Loud inexplicable noises: invisible creatures?
Just a bit ago, i was walking around a planet when i heard the familiar loud noises that seemed to echo all around, some call it claps, some call it sky quakes, some call it titan farts, some call it fairy gossip, they may be hard to determine exactly where they come from. Once again i got curious, as ive heard this loud sounds many times, but was never able to determine what exactly was making them. I actually thought they were some sort of sky quake things, falling rocks, landslides, just to fill the quietness with something else, for some reason.
Now, the reason why i never associated these with large and heavy creatures is because i havent seen many of those, and the ones ive seen were just the skinny thin legged insect like critters that didnt make any specific sound, just shook the ground when i got too close. Maybe it was flat terrain not creating an echo, dunno.
I walked and looked around, so i could cover the whole valley with the scanner and try to spot something.

Nothing special with it, just a large, heavy dog. When i got close, the foostpeps sounded loud with no echo, just as i expected. As i walked away towards the edge of the valley by the hill, at some 130U away, the critter's footsteps started echoing again, sounding like those loud claps. At that distance, it was still very visible.

Still visible with and without scope, footsteps (or pawsteps) sounded like muffled claps in the distance.

This got me thinking, however. Ive heard those quite a few times, but never actualy saw anything that could be making them, and i was always curious, and always looked around for the source. Could these be creatures that were invisible, as in failed to render? Some sort of engine glitch that failed to put the pieces together and display the actual critter? Maybe they were spawned underground, trapped in the gap between the surface and a cave below, and could not be scanned? Maybe tiny critters making the wrong sound?

Im just tossing it out there, mostly as speculation, but this, along with possible bugged cave creatures, could be one of the reasons why some planets are nearly impossible to 100%.

Do you recall if this happens in multiplayer or solo? Include that info in your bug reports to HG.

I noticed that when I e.g. mine crystals in multiplayer, odd things happen with sounds. Roughly 30 sec after I finished mining there always was a sudden sound like a rock shattering, coming from the same location where I had stopped mining. Also I can sometimes hear space battle sounds on the ground when someone else is dogfighting far away above me.

We know that HG often mix up "variables"... maybe another player was hunting an animal inside a cave, and you got his sound? Just a very wild guess...

The only time I hear that sound is when im firing my boltcaster. So I just assumed it was echo from the gun. But then I was watching Gaming Mike the other night and he wasn't doing anything and the sound happened and he wandered around looking for a source for some time. I really think its just an animal. It doesn't disturb me. I recognize that I am on an alien world and weird things are gonna be....

I had this happen last week. I was on one of my home planets doing some modifications to my Submarine base and I kept hearing the sound of hammering!

It literally sounded like someone was building a house or something a short distance away.

VERY odd!

I get this a lot.... I play with a good 5.1 surround sound setup. When a game has a lot of audio going on and uses the surround capacity properly, external sounds will sound as part of the game I'm playing. Not so bad when the sound is obviously not from the game, but on occasion I'll get external sounds that I think are coming from the game. Like 2 gun shots over the weekend..... Was playing DayZ......thought I was being followed when I heard those 2 shots. Turned out to have come from down the street. A few hours later I jump on my bike and head to the C-store when I see a few cop cars and ambulance in front of an apartment complex where the shooting took place. That's when it suddenly dawned on me...oh...this is where the gun shots came from.

That's probably feeding back through the microphone of the other player. There is a delay in the feedback. When I played MP I could hear myself in the sound feed from the other person. It was a bout a second or so delay.

This is not a MP issue, no. Id know if there was someone in my game, and of course, id know where he was. I also have mic disabled for MP.
Its also not my mic being on capturing something, like an accidental bump or tap, or the external odd sound. These are game sounds, not external source.

I hear it in my solo game also. The first time I heard it was around holloween, so thought was some special effect. Still hear it. It sounds like hammering. No mic set up at all. I hear it at random times, so couldn't say exactly what might be causing it.
This sound?

If not then there is another bug with sound effects

Yes, that's the sound.

What I hear as a sharp, crunchy type sound seems to be related to predators "munching" on their prey. I only hear that when that activity is happening.
Hm, we talked about that here: https://steamcommunity.com/app/275850/discussions/0/1736595227844214605/

i'm still not sure if it is the same because one said here game sounds were repeated what will happen in multiplayer with bad sound setups (speakers to mic -> resend over MP voice channel)

but these sounds from animals drove me crazy too *g* still do hehe

That is one of the sounds, yes.
It could be a large creature walking, with the sound amplified and echoed by nearby hills, mountains, cliffs, a cave, something like that, but im just speculating. The main issue is, IF that sound was (is) actually being generated by a large (or very large) creature, we would see that creature, right? But we dont, at least sometimes, and thats what im trying to figure out. If it is an invisible creature or not. If so, along with potentially missing/invisible cave critters, it makes for a real bad mix for explorers trying hard to get 100%.
One way to sort of debunk it is something getting 100% critter on a planet that has that sound effect and absolutely NONE of the creatures is making it. Or someone with evidence that this is a sound oddity that is not related, or some sort of atmospheric effect.

Yeah, they need to work on "sound issues"... this "smacking/clapping" one (predators eating prey) was introduced after the Abyss update for me.

However. The number one annoyance for me (currently) had been there since before NEXT [that being] the chronic, sticky sound effect inside and outside my spaceship after visiting rainy/wet planets... the sound of rain hitting the canopy while flying and sitting in the ship, as well as the dripping water effect when standing outside it. Both sticky themselves to whichever ship i am using.

It seems to be getting worse.

Getting into and out of ship helps temporarily, but the sound effects soon return... kind'a ruins emmersion just a little, when you're looking at a dreamscape of crazy cactuses and such, meanwhile it's raining invisible rain.

P.s. I also seem to need to go to the bathroom more often than usual as this occurs.

That made me laugh so hard i think i peed a bit :D

If half the bugs were features, we would be so happy! We would have something mysterious to explore... Follow the strange sound and find a unique animal in any echoy cave... Follow the one herd animal that acts differently... Follow the one sentinel that acts oddly... Why are these plants growing in circles, and around what... etc. etc...

I once spent an hour or so hunting after sentinels that spawned right next to my base, completely ignored me, and flew vertically up (or downwards) with a question mark symbol. I assume they were aggroed by the other person in the same session who was fighting sentinels elsewhere. I don't even know if they could realistically reach him in time by flying. It was maybe a bug that they spawn next to me and try to reach someone extremely far away, but it was fun to pretend to explore anyway.

Fun fact: They use that "sound of running water" method in nursing homes to inspire dementia patients not to forget to use the bathroom before going to bed...
