Also, I guess this doesn't even matter if your frieghter is in the same system because you can access your storage units on the friegther through the menu
So I guess the real question is, what is "fully functional" in your opinion? What would it need?

I like to find a nearby cave to "hide" my 10 storage units.
Good question, should've been more specific. I have been trying to incorporate two storage units only, they are a major pain indeed for me. If the game didnt have the terrain regeneration lets say that, i could make some room inside the ground, but thats not an option. Their room needs to have two levels of walls and letting them in the open is too ugly for me. I have no need for terminals or farms, but was trying to have some bedroom concept and an 'energy room' (batteries and such) separated. While having two medium refiners, the portal and base computer. I am trying to make some compact base with only that in mind and i am failing miserably.
Edit: To add, I would like this 'compact idea' to be padronized. Like the same kind of 'compact outpost' in different planets. They would serve as some kind of resting and basic operation outpost in different planets. I am only finding a hard time to do it right, something that works and its pretty at the same time.
I would like to know a little bit about that. While all the terrain modification we do usually gets back/renegerate. If we build inside an already existing cave, is it then safe? it wont fill itself for some weird reason?
I'm not sure what they did with this cave concept, but I have done this before.
Basically there was a hole in the ground that lead to a cave and I built the base ontop of that with stairs going down to the cave....I put all the storage units in the cave. There's probably tons of ways to do that.
Just 2 storage units? That can only mean one thing. You are not a pack rat
congrats on that. I wish I wasn't
Even if you find perfectly flat land , if it has grass it will come through the floor
The base should be raised, even if just a little. Also as far as compactness, if you raise the base you can put stuff underneath it too like your vehicle pads and what not, basically anything except a landing pad

I've never seen a cave get filled in. Its the only way I'll build underground.

This works too. There's no reason to interface with these storage units. Bury them and forget about it. Your freighter handles all of the necessary access to them.

This won't help with the storage unit issue (I think the freighter is the best solution for that), but it's a pretty compact design (by another player that I like to copy). Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

whats happening at the top left of your screenshot? Is that a trading post? Did you find a trading post right next to a portal? I have never seen that
No, that's part of another players base. There are at least 4 bases clustered around this portal. All Base Computers are within/under 300u of each other. Folks build BC outside 300u, then extend inward to the portal. Then they move the BC near the portal. Confusing sometimes.
