Just be sure to use a crap ship because alas, things on it will get broken and you need to just repair the hyperdrive with each BH jump - although it could remain intact - , leave anything else broken, you can jump anyway.
Portals in single player are useless for getting closer to center, it's just a holiday trip with a back ticket. I just tested it, it's much worse than in Atlas Rises.
Black holes, though they do put you in another place around the Galactic Centre, also get you closer by about 6000ly (maximum possible warp range with ideal ship and upgrade rolls approaches 3000ly). The major downside, getting non-essential tech broken in your starship's general inventory whenever you pass through a black hole, can be mitigated by putting your important tech, such as your three A-class and/or S-class Hyperdrive Upgrades (for the fuel cost reductions), in technology inventory.
I was able to get to the galactic centre from ~600,000ly away in a couple of hours by chaining black holes. I did run through 20 or so Warp Cells on the way, but if you stock up on Condensed Carbon and Chromatic Metal before the trip and buy Oxygen and Ferrite Dust from space stations as needed, you shouldn't need to detour to any planets for refueling purposes.
As a plus, black hole chaining can earn you a bunch of Nanite Clusters from all the system discoveries (you discover 2 systems for every fuel-consuming warp since black holes take you to another system for free).
Note: Black hole chaining is only possible if you have the ability to see nearby black holes. This ability is granted upon completion of the Atlas Path.
I didnt' play this out, but yes with network on, and with the help of an MP friend you will be able to bypass the restrictions and continue your journey at a portal destination. I think the solution is exchanging the hosts at the friend's base or some trick like that, it's explained elsewhere in this forum. Only thing I know for sure is: yes you can .. and fast.
I know that this used to work for me after the Next update, but it was maybe patched (as you could get yourself into serious trouble if you didn´t notice the necessity to return via the same portal soon enough); or like others suggested, it is currently like that because of the ongoing community event.
Dunno, but I might try again after the latter.
I did not try if building a base on the other side of the Portal would eventually let you teleport back to it, so that you could continue towards the center (kind of like it used to work before the big update).
You could end up with some "unwanted" bases though, that clutter the teleporter list even after being deleted... so a manual savepoint to be able to return to might be helpful to avoid that if you want to try this way.
Dang, I really hope there will be a way again to use portals for long distance travels. They are so convenient... ;)
From what I have tested in 1.58d (GoG version), you cannot any longer build a base once going through a portal, you cannot use the galaxy map and the teleport on spacestation is empty. What I have not tested is what happens if you buy a freighter, will you get access to galaxy map inside the freighter and could you warp with it? I don't think so.
I now use a semi-cheat with the save editor that corrisponds to the procedure in Atlas Rises, I use random glyphs with portals and give myself 2 trials to get nearer to the center. In the discovery page you can click on a system which will save a customer waypoint; I replace this waypoint with my current coordinates in the save editor and will spawn there without restrictions. Better chose a 'non charted' system so you will spawn on a planet, else you may spawn in space, die and will have to recover your grave...:)
Ah ok, thanks for the clarification. I guess it will most probably be the same for the Steam-version.
One could have a look into "No Man´s Connect" if the desire for a fast travel option arises as well.
I know of Travellers who use it and it seems to work fine...
before there are a many "mad player" how don't enderstand and get stuck in the area because the portal icon disasper and they not note the planet and systeme name go aways and get lost.
now we can"t travel in space for that reason .
Before this update the base station after going back is access on the teleportation list.
i have not test if this is modified .
i have make a french guide for the core galaxie run , i need to finish it with screenshoot of the portal and many other small img and tips but it's good enought for the trip
Because Nada will stop giving you blackhole locations after the first one.
So don't bother with reaching the center.
