Inventory question
I know that you can use Starship Storage Augmentation to open up new slots in your spaceship, but is there any way to increase your MAX possible storage beyond the white rectangular line surrounding your inventory slots?

For example, I'm still using my starter ship. The reason I still am is because it has 21 possible tech and 21 possible cargo slots that I can unlock. EVERY OTHER FIGHTER that I see/examine from other NPC pilots only has 7 of each. So out of the 48 squares shown on those inventory pages, I my fighter is the only one I've ever come across that has 21 unlockable inventory slots surrounded by the white rectangle.

Is there a way to expand the slots beyond this white line? If not, I may as well use these nanites and starship storage augmentation upgrades that I've saved up on my current ship to increase its storage and class. But if I can expand past that white line, I'd like to use it on a ship with better stats.

Look it up on NMS wiki page for ships. I don't recall the exact numbers, but each ship type has a different number of slots you can achieve:
Fighters, Shuttles, Explorers, and Haulers I believe is the order from smallest to largest inventory space that you can unlock.
So where a hauler can unlock 48 slots, a fighter will only ever have a max of 21.
Many ships you find at space stations and such will have just a few slots unloked, but should be able to be unlocked all the way up to the type's potential.

48 general inventory and 21 tech is the max for all S-class ships. The variable is the cargo for which the hauler has the most possible slots. Is it 48 cargo for the hauler? Not sure.

As a reminder:
You have to upgrade the class of a ship to unlock new rows of storage slots that you can buy afterwards. With each higher class there will be more slots available. As soon as your ship is a S-class one you can unlock all possible inventory slots (as mentioned 48/21/21 or 48/21/42 for haulers).

I just discovered that the tech slots have increased to 28 on one of my exotics and I'm currently filling out tech slots on another to see if that is across all my exotics or just a bug in one.

I've upgraded my C class fighter to B but saw no difference. I later temporarily upgraded to an A class (without saving) but still saw no change in inventory, which is part of my confusion. No change in the number of available slots through two upgrades.

Then again, I can't seem to find any other fighter that has the same number of slots mine already has (even if I buy and upgrade it without saving the game). I have 3x the number of tech and cargo slots as other fighters I find, but the stats are lower.

After upgrading your class you have to buy the inventory slots. Upgrading a class will just unlock the inventory slots for buying.
As example:
C-class will have at max 7 tech slots (you have to buy those if your ship doesn't already have 7). After that it's maxed and you can't buy others.
Upon upgrading it to B-class you can buy further slots to max them at 14.
Etc.

Upgrading class ---> unlocks the ability to buy more slots.
Buying slots ---> new slots in your ship
