Flora Scanning Quest Bugged
I'm at the end of my tether with this quest.
It keeps failing to count plants I've scanned...

The first flora-scanning quest I figured would be easy since I scan plants and animals all the time... EXCEPT that apparently I had to scan them all on one planet in another system. Well fine. I went there and scanned 10 plant species... except it only counted 9. It only counted 10 once I'd scanned 12 species.

I was a fool to get another one. Really I was. I should have just left it well enough alone, but I decided to try again.
So here I am on a volcanic planet riddled with sentinels, wildfires and all kinds of other nastiness. I've been told I have to scan 10 plants.
Okay... well...
I've scanned 14/25 species according to the Exploration Guide.
The Discoveries page indicates I've found 10 Flora... not sure where the hell the other 4 are.
But... the flora-scanning quest... has only recorded 6/10.

And I can't find any new plants anywhere I look. It is an absolute nightmare. I've scoured the landscape, crawled up the sides of the volcanoes, gone spelunking in caves... but I can't find anything new... AND even if I did, it would probably just ignore half of what I scanned anyway.

Is there any easy way to solve this problem, or should I just be going back to the nearest spacestation and cancelling the quest?

I do those all the time and never have any issues. My first suggestion would be to turn off MP since that feature is causing all sorts of havoc right now.

If you haven't yet, try inside caves and look for oxy plants. The cave flowers come in a variety of styles that look almost identical to me but are counted different. Same with the oxy plants although they are usually different looking. Just always a surprise to find more then one type on a planet.

I was just on a planet where there were a lot of "repeats" that look like something you have already scanned but you get credit for doing it a second time.

What is "MP"? ... If you mean multiplayer, I'm playing in single-player... for what it matters.

Done both of those things. Made explicit mention of the former already. Found two types of oxy plant and scanned both. Also scanned the blue flowers and the yellow flowers. Scanned the harmful plants too.
I've also tried upping my ship and moving to another part of the planet. Specifically I went to where the actual quest-marker was in the hopes that it might be leading me to the right plants... but it wasn't.

I've long since found all the animals on the planet, and I'm quite tired of being on this flaming hellhole. :thesurgewarning:

So did you turn MP off? It's on by default.

I do these all the time and never have a counting issue. BUT, I have MP off.

Is it possible that someone else had discovered a couple of those plants earlier? You can tell by looking at the plants individually in your Discovery pages. You get nanites for discovering them for yourself, but you don't get mission credit because they're already known.

I see now. In the Network Settings. But then I'm not playing Multiplayer in the first place, so I'm not sure why it would have been on. Oh well.
I guess it is too late for this particular quest / planet though.

Not a chance. I discovered the planet today. I've been in the same area of the galaxy the last couple of days and the only sign anyone else was anywhere near was some other star system a little ways off named by someone else a while back.

One last thing that may help; I believe that quest will behave the same way many Nexus missions do. You are required to reach the "Target Planet" but, having done so, you can go to any other planet to fulfill the remaining objectives. In other words, go scan plants on another planet to get your quota.

Strangely enough, I tried that too. Didn't work, sadly.

The quest is: Scan unique plants.
Which just means: Dangerous flora, sodium/oxygen/jet booster plants don't count. Only normal plants that give you ressources by mining (again: Not dangerous flora.).
You did scan 9 unique plants and one of those generic ones. Then another generic one. And only after scanning a tenth unique plant the quest was completed.
Nothing wrong here.

I saw the number going up after scanning one of the Oxygen plants though. It was stuck on 5/10 for ages. Scanning an Oxygen flower was what made it go up to 6, and I'm pretty sure it was the second type of Oxy flower I'd seen there.
I mean it is a fair hypothesis... but I saw it disproven with my own eyes.

Can't present the proof though... I mean I wasn't recording video at the time.

Multiplayer is on by default and so is pvp and building permissions. Not only that, but each time you make a new character save it goes back to default. So double check.

Why this? Well it's HGs way to troll players and see who's paying attention and who's the dumb dumb noodle. :steammocking:

If you get a quest on a planet you don't fancy, just cancel the quest. Simple.

Sure about that?
The quest always was the same: Only unique plants are counted towards the goal.

For future tries: Always scan the normal flora and you won't have this problem anymore. This I can guarantee.

Well, I guess that makes me the dumb noodle. :feste: Good thing you told me before I found out the hard way, huh?

Yes. Absolutely 100% sure.

I think I found the reason why it wasn't working in the end:
The Better Planet Generation mod. I consider it an absolutely essential mod, but it does change a LOT of the plants on planets, and to a lesser extent the rocks... and apparently the new plants it adds that aren't on that planet in the base game don't count towards quest progress. And the reason I never seem to find even half the plants / minerals on a planet is because the total number is counting both the ones that are meant to be there (but aren't) and the ones the mod is adding to replace them.

Seems I can still do the mineral scans, but the flora scans are basically impossible with this mod running... and the game is vastly less fun without it.

i don't run any mods and i have scanned a plant which has not counted on a handful of occasions - no more than one per mission. as far as i remember it was always either a hostile plant or resource plant, even if other similar plants did count.

but i always managed to complete eventually by finding something else.
