Which weapon is the best for multitool?

Overall a fully upgraded boltcaster is king. A fully upgraded scatter blaster is nice, too - you have to be close, though.
Plasma launchers will make big holes - and can kill yourself. Double kill, ftw!
The others I consider to be nice gimmicks.

Scatter Blaster is like a really effective shotgun.
Pulse splitter is my favorite cuz of long auto pew pew pew which is so satisfying. Mine is fully upgraded with max X class modules. With the secondary stun weapon a large sentinel goes down fast.

Oh yes I used boltcaster as main weapon for a few months. It has 3 max X modules, 3 max sentinel modules dealing 9k but burst fire weapons get boring for me. My pulse splitter at 9k damage is faster and more fun.

I use the Pulse Splitter (Primary) and Plasma Grenade Launcher (Secondary) on my general use multi-tool, with the Scatter Blaster and Neutron Cannon (Both primaries, the first for turrets and drones, the second for bugs and pods) on my multi-tool meant for derelict freighters (Combat Scope as the secondary, since grenades are too dangerous in tight spaces).

I second this. They ruined the Boltcaster when they forced it to be a burst fire weapon. It feels awful.

Paralysis Mortar + Voltaic Amplifier is the best... after that any weapon for damage, I prefer the Scatter Blaster.

Because of the way the game determines upgrade module stats, which weapon is better depends on how lucky you are at getting the best S class upgrade modules. Math is not my strong suit but this guy explains how module stats are calculated and how to manipulate the process to get the best modules. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jFhoapriFnk

At least for me, the boltcaster is a good choice in almost any combat situation. The scatter blaster is slightly better if you're fighting at close range, which you often are. The blaze javelin used to be terrible, but with the waveform oscillator, the stunning effect is pretty reliable, so you can end a fight with a single opponent in one shot. I haven't quite got the hang of the neutron cannon, but both charged fire and rapid fire seem fairly effective.

If in doubt, go with boltcaster.

In flatscreen, the most popular choices seems to be scatter blaster and blaze javelin.

In VR scatter blaster is too loud (painful to the point where it feels like it might burst your eardrum), and javelin takes longer to aim.

If you're in VR, the best are boltcaster and neutron cannon.
That's because boltcaster is easiest to aim in VR (anything with bullet trail makes you a sniper), and neutron cannon deals splash damage (useful for horrific nest on derelicts).
Pulse splitter is also usable, but is a meh, because of travel time on projectiles.

One comment, a fully maxed out boltcaster does the most damage. Provided you can get it on target - which I often can't.

I found the scatter blaster more reliable.

Best is plasma launcher. (Doesn't make holes btw.) It can kill group of sentinels in one shot if fully upgraded(3 best upgrades in supercharged slots). Largest sentinel in 5 shots. It's also good for clearing freighters. But boltcaster is close second it requires 3 more upgrades (Forbidden Multi-Tool Module) which add +50% fire rate each when in supercharged slots. That results in basically instantaneous emptying of the gun in one spot. It's also good idea to use botlcaster as main weapon for sentinels and plasma launcher for freighter insects. But for beginners its probably best to just put cannon on minotaur.

Fully upgraded Neutron Cannon, at least for sentinels. It has decent range, provided you can aim it does full damage out to maximum range and has AOE so it'll damage healers as well as the primary target.

Plasma launcher has a high suicide rate, I don't use it for that reason.

I recently tried neutron cannon setup. With decent S-class upgrades (X-class seem to be inferior, according to wiki) you can basically deal more damage than the scatterblaster. It has a hold and charge function, but the damage seems the same like with single shot imho.
You can clear up an infested area pretty fast (wisper eggs) and kill them before they even try to crawl out the ground. Regular sentinels need only 2 shots to be destroyed, bigger ones like 3 to 8 shots, walkers less than 20 ish.
