Can you use a flight stick?
I’m getting a HOTAS system and was looking for games that support it. Is a flight stick supported in this game?

Not natively, the flight model is just too simple. You can still use it with some work around.

I use a Thrustmaster HOTAS with this game and love it. Use x360ce to get it working. Takes a bit of work to get all the controls mapped to your liking, but worth it IMO.

For games that make good use of HOTAS, try Elite Dangerous.
I use a throttle from CH and a Thrustmaster T16000M FSC
warning: Took a looong time to map controls to my liking

Do you need to employ a mod to use your Hotas system?

Not a mod as such. NMS recognizes an X360 controller. x360ce[www.x360ce.com] installs as a wedge between the joystick and the app so that the stick appears as an X360 controller.

It does take some tweaking to get the controls mapped to an individual's preferences.

One thing to watch for: In what I think was the default setup, there was a significant amount of anti-deadzone. Unless the stick was exactly centered, there was a lot (relatively) of motion. Seems like a dumb setting. Removed that and added just a little bit of "regular" deadzone and now it's happy.

Ok, thanks!

Not in ED, don't know about NMS
