Everyone tosses it away right until they try to build a real base. And then it becomes the most precious thing in the universe.

How many hours does it take you to refine it into usable ferrite?

I never tossed it away - ferrite dust is more useful than just for being used in building.
And sometimes you need quite the amount for what you want to achieve by certain means: There are many refiner recipes that benefit from or require ferrite dust derivates.
It depends on your playstyle if it will be valuable to you or not.

One can just shoot the ground from the starship - an easiest way to get lots of ferrite dust and carbon. Some planets give enormous quantities in minutes or even seconds(carbon).

In Normal mode, it’s sellable junk. However, in Survival mode where you can’t carry 10,000 metric tones of one material, this is what I call a ‘doubler’.

NMS ‘Doubler’: Any material that when processed through your personal refiner, yields a 1:2 ratio. Eg Rusted metal, cactus flesh, condensed carbon, sodium nitrate. This allows a wise Traveller to carry 500 in a 250 slot.

Less than it takes to refine a stack of runaway mould. :p

yep! on one of my saves, i even have a couple of rust hotspots that i work... with a couple of dozen storage silos, i have plenty of rust to turn into proper ferrite and from there into other usable things...

I just buy rust or ferrite from space stations. I always have enough and I refine goop into each new tier in my in exosuit refiner while I'm exploring. I do the same thing with rust that I find laying around.

i did it with the hotspot because i found it easier and nicer to just teleport into my base there, scoop up a bunch, and drop it into the refiners while i spend some time doing something else while it processed... something else like reading posts here ;)

wait why mine ferrite at all? If you put your ship on slowest possible speed (20km i think) and fire your scatter blaster @ the surface indiscriminitely, you get about 20k FE dust, pure FE, C, and C+ (with some dihydrogen mixed in there) in about 1-2 minutes. you can do this casually right before you land or before you take off on your way to do just about anything
It's easiest on the grassless planets with little rocks everywhere. I had 68 geodes and 9999 + FE last time I had to do this 3 weeks ago

I can't speak for anyone else, but I do it because once a mine is set up, it's 0 minutes vs. your 1-2 minutes.

Different strokes for different folks, but oxygen and ferrite are two things I pretty much get mines/extractors set up for ASAP. Both absolutely are super easy to get without mines or extractors, I just always favor a 0 time solution for resources I know I will use a ton of.

It also increases storage capacity for it, seeing as the silos you build will store it until you retrieve it. Storage limits are an actual concern when playing in survival/permadeath.

Well, it's a lot more than 1-2 minutes, let alone 0, to refine rust into ferrite dust, but the rest is valid, especially "different strokes".

It takes 1 second to throw rust into a refiner and it can be done anywhere at any time. Simpler, faster, and most especially more convenient (the 'any time, anywhere" aspect) than strafing a planetary surface.

But as you say, different strokes for sure.

Except when the refiners eat the inventory.

If you're referring to dropping rust you happen upon in containers into your personal refiner, sure. But strafing a planet is considerably more "any time, anywhere" than "in your base on a planet with minable rust where you set up mining infrastructure".
