Ship Scrapping made simple WITH profit and a purpose
Disclaimer: the following is in part based on stuff i've picked up from Youtube vids by 'Hawkes Gaming', 'Survival Bob', 'KJ PC Gaming', 'Xaine' & 'Q Ball Gaming' over the last 2-3 years...so thnx to them...and no i'm not advocating either of the two methods below for anyone else, just explaining the mechanics and benefits...and no i'm not pushing it as the best method for nanites or units.

Buying and scrapping AND making a profit:
use a 3 tier/star economy system as this gives the best chances of S and A class ships spawning
don't spend more than 2-2.5million on a ship to scrap as it makes it harder to break even or profit (exotics in a 1st or 2nd wave system is the exception to this see scrapping with intent).
buy S and A class ships (dismantle any installed tech) and scrap them (if a model doesn't give storage augments don't buy it again) sell the upgrades from scrapping for nanites, but keep the storage augments, when you're ready to quit scrapping (with at least 20+ storage augments) buy a cheap s-class fighter or an exotic and expand the inventory (NOT the tech as that doesn't increase the ship value) as far as you can then scrap that ship to make you're money.
NB: this method works but it takes awhile to do (as in maybe hours...and can make you wanna watch paint dry)

Scrapping with intent (in 30mins or less):
A great scrapping session would have the following
a bankroll of >50million units
a lot of free slots in your exosuit general inventory (...no free slots blah, blah blah)
a system with 1 or more exotic guaranteed in the first 2 waves...wait...wot does he mean waves..? after a reload on space station the ships once spawned, come in and land in waves of 4-5ish ships per wave...and we're interested in only the first 2 waves)

(the next bit is not required but makes scrapping a whole lot easier)
ship slots 0, 1, 2 empty...use the save editor or 'NMS Collections and backup' tool to move your fav ship into slot 3, (slot 4 Golden vector and slot 5 for a living ship or empty if you don't have them...or you're own favs)
...the reason for the above is that after a scrap the game returns the ship in the lowest slot number so after a single scrap of any ship the game will cycle 0-5 back to you IN that order making for uninterrupted scrapping until you get to slot 3 (your fav)

why the Golden Vector you ask...cos we only have 6 slots...with the GV and Gumsk's Custom ships mod i have access to 60 (to date) different ships (for when the mood takes me) or you could use the save editor or 'NMS collections' tool to 'garage' ships you like and replace the 3-5 slots with whatever are your favs at the time...anyways i digress...

using you fav ship (slot 3) save and reload in the space station with 1st/2nd wave exotic(s), look straight ahead without moving (moving can affect the order that ships land) when the exotics in the 1st wave start coming in, buy (6-12million) and scrap them (don't forget to dismantle tech before scrapping)...do the usual selling of scrap/upgrades, then make a save in your fav ship and reload.

rinse and repeat until ready to stop (with >30 storage augments) buy one last exotic, and 'pimp' out the storage of that baby to 48 slots (again NOT Tech) the ship value will go upto 150-180ish millions (if not...save and reload as there is a bug in the re-calculation of a recently expanded ships) scrap this to more than cover your units spent + you got tons of nanites + (storage augments + S-Class upgrades...if you kept some for your fav ships)
...oh...as part of the scrap you should get some Starship AI valves (value 50million units each) stuff these in storage on your freighter (money under the mattress) so as to avoid the unit cap limit

NB. this method is quick but isn't for everyone, some may find it a bit cheesy...Lol

also...systems with guaranteed 1st or 2nd wave exotics often get incidentally nurfed by changes in an update and finding one can be a 'royal' (pun intended) pain...but wait...Q Ball gaming (youtube) has some vids of exotic double and triple spawn 1st wave systems, some still work i.e. the one i use...was a double 1st wave, now it's more like a 1.5 where the second ships sometimes is 1st wave and sometimes 2nd...but they usually give 3 S-class upgrades and 3 augments per ship.
