Rare Underground creatures are just non-existent
I've been to like 25 caverns on the same planet. Not a single sighting. This nonsense? Not okay. Last critter to find, ON MULTIPLE WORLDS NOW... for a nice big injection of nanites. Can't find them because they just don't exist. GG HelloGames. GG.

i could tell you, i've found some of them...but i've also NOT found them more than the first

...so now i take one look around a good size cave maybe try a minor settlement as these sometimes have caves edging the flat plains of the building and the underground fauna can spawn overground there.

if i don't find it'them, i move on...it's not worth my time and the fun drains away the longer you try.

They do exist.
1. Don't just look underground - sometimes they spawn above ground - near terrain that would indicate a cave.
2. Search for different biomes in which the caves exist. Sometimes you can see by looking at the cave floor that this cave will be different from those you've already explored. What I experienced so far, is, that two types of caves exist - a plains variant and a mountain variant. If caves in flatlands don't work, go to the mountains and you will find your animal.

Yes, they can be hard to find but with those two tipps I've always tackled them.

Also travel to another hemisphere on the planet. Animals sometimes spawn in the north vs. the south, and you have to travel to the other side of the planet.

Had a base on a planet, with a giant worm (the type that is bigger then your ship), saw it only once, despite 30+ hours around the planet. You would think it would be hard to miss it, but no idea where it went or if count as 1 of the 2 I'm missing.

Underground + rare is the worst combo. I made myself complete several planets and it took a couple hours for some of them. If you just want to finish a planet, you need to get lucky, or ignore underground fauna and move on to planets that have none.

Underground, rare, and only in one hemisphere ... a combination of factors certainly can make find all fauna frustrating. But I'm one doggedly persistent bugger of a Traveler! :D

When it comes to completing all the fauna on a planet if the last 1-2 are underground mobs I just move on to another planet. Underground mobs are just entirely too rare and you can waste hours looking for them.

You can do all five waves of sentinels and cash in the upgrades and make far more nanites than the completion bonus.

I tend to ignore rare underground, but... sometimes the nanites are just too good.

I try to look for buildings, anything that is a "site". Sites flatten the landscape and can expose underground caverns to the surface. I found more rare animals there then running around underground. It seems to help to hang around for a bit, minute or two. They don't always pop as you arrive.
Exosuit Storage Upgrade runs can be good for this, a new drop pod site every few minutes.

Things to avoid:
Some planets are too flat, buildings don't expose caverns. Some planets are ultra vertical and have crappy narrow vertical caverns, mobs don't seem to spawn on sloped bedrock. The worst are planets with lava tunnels(?). Tunnels count as above ground and don't spawn underground animals.

I also tried using food in caverns, that was suggested, but as far as I can tell it never did anything but waste my food pallets.

I can't say as I've ever seen an underground animal before.

When it comes to nanites though, isn't it just easier to drive an exocraft up to a curious deposit of runaway mould and harvest the whole bunch?

I've got an entire deposit of the stuff right off the front porch of my main base, and it comes back every time I leave the planet and return. The stuff is effectively infinite, and 9999 of it refines to like 2000 nanites. The entire deposit gives about 15,000 mould.

Maybe that stuff is hard to find and I've just been lucky, but I've seen deposits of it on at least three different planets in the last week.

Even though they have a red dot, they cannot be scanned and do not count towards the goal.

Yeah, open all the stained glass and then sell the exosuit and weapon upgrades to the module vendors for nanites. Can easily get 4-5k per complete wave.

* slight correction above “salvaged glass”

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve found underground fauna (regardless of class) after walking into a cave & looking for 1 - 3 minutes then as I’m walking back out the same way & poof walking around the entrance, that glorious red dot.

Iirc my largest reward was 4k nanites for 14 fauna
