...so now i take one look around a good size cave maybe try a minor settlement as these sometimes have caves edging the flat plains of the building and the underground fauna can spawn overground there.
if i don't find it'them, i move on...it's not worth my time and the fun drains away the longer you try.
1. Don't just look underground - sometimes they spawn above ground - near terrain that would indicate a cave.
2. Search for different biomes in which the caves exist. Sometimes you can see by looking at the cave floor that this cave will be different from those you've already explored. What I experienced so far, is, that two types of caves exist - a plains variant and a mountain variant. If caves in flatlands don't work, go to the mountains and you will find your animal.
Yes, they can be hard to find but with those two tipps I've always tackled them.
You can do all five waves of sentinels and cash in the upgrades and make far more nanites than the completion bonus.
I try to look for buildings, anything that is a "site". Sites flatten the landscape and can expose underground caverns to the surface. I found more rare animals there then running around underground. It seems to help to hang around for a bit, minute or two. They don't always pop as you arrive.
Exosuit Storage Upgrade runs can be good for this, a new drop pod site every few minutes.
Things to avoid:
Some planets are too flat, buildings don't expose caverns. Some planets are ultra vertical and have crappy narrow vertical caverns, mobs don't seem to spawn on sloped bedrock. The worst are planets with lava tunnels(?). Tunnels count as above ground and don't spawn underground animals.
I also tried using food in caverns, that was suggested, but as far as I can tell it never did anything but waste my food pallets.
When it comes to nanites though, isn't it just easier to drive an exocraft up to a curious deposit of runaway mould and harvest the whole bunch?
I've got an entire deposit of the stuff right off the front porch of my main base, and it comes back every time I leave the planet and return. The stuff is effectively infinite, and 9999 of it refines to like 2000 nanites. The entire deposit gives about 15,000 mould.
Maybe that stuff is hard to find and I've just been lucky, but I've seen deposits of it on at least three different planets in the last week.
Cash in the upgrades? wym?
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve found underground fauna (regardless of class) after walking into a cave & looking for 1 - 3 minutes then as I’m walking back out the same way & poof walking around the entrance, that glorious red dot.
Iirc my largest reward was 4k nanites for 14 fauna
sigh... just thoughts...
