Same Ship Squadron?
Is there a way to get your squadron to all use the same ship type?

I tried recruiting the next pilot that came in and I noticed you were not allowed to recruit the same type ship a second time.

1. Warp to system of 1 of 3 races (tested with trading post)
2. Trade your ship to a NPC pilot
3. Run over and recruit him to squadron
4. Wait for ship to come back
5. Trade the NPC ship back for your original ship
6. goto 1

See beeblebum's channel on YT. Basically you buy one ship 4 times, go to the space station with one of those ships as your main, exchange your ship with an alien then quickly run to your old ship and recruit the thing to your squadron. Since you can't repeat the same maneuver in one system, you need to repeat it in another space station, then another, then yet another.

There's another way, you could buy just one ship, but this is risky as there's no guarantee it will land back when it flies off the space station and you will need to buy another. Anyway I managed to do it and now have 5 living ships in a squadron (me included).

Well it is a good thing I built a portal base to mark the ship location.

I want to make a squadron of these....

I bought one for myself, recruited a pilot with the next one that showed up. So I would need to buy three more, fire my other three squadron guys, then do like you said to swap and hire.

You would think they would have made such a thing easier to do....

Of course all of that is easy compared to finding a S class freighter that looks like a mini-star destroyer, lol.

Ok, I tried it out at the trading post on a planet. Once you trade the ship the ship comes in and lands again with the name reset to the default and then you cannot recruit the pilot.

I went to a station (which does not make the ship land again) and tried it and the name reset to the default and once again was unable to recruit.

So it looks like it got patched out?

Kinda disappointing you cannot make a squadron of the same ships or customize their names.

I ran into the same problem. Sometimes it worked, sometimes not.

Yeah, but I just hate to step out onto that slippery slope, lol.

I'm lucky I did that trick before that supposed "fix". I don't understand why they would spend time and effort to "patch" something that is actually a cool feature.

What could be wrong in having a squadron composed of the same looking ships. It's not like Squadron help win a fight anyway, they are just here to look cool.

You know, if you just do a reload, you can hire the same ship again. Even waiting a few minutes will allow you to hire the clones.

Please go test your theories before presenting them.

If I bought four of the same ship, dont ya think that option would have shown up if what you said was true.

For one, your comment makes no sense.

Two, they have fixed it in the beta game because it’s supposed to work.

Three, I have seen it in my own game. But there is no way in hell I could have seen it yours.

I’m so damned tired of trying to be helpful just to be treated like this. :twopointsplat:

After hiring the NPC, and the ship returns, just claim the free ship and go to another location or system. It doesn't allow you to hire at the same location twice. Claiming the ship doesn't remove the hired NPC, it makes a copy. That way you only need to purchase one ship.

Come on seriously.....can people stop parroting junk information and try this yourselves before suggesting it?

Wrong. you can recruit four squadron members in the same station without any issue or exploits as long as they have different ships.

Claim what free ship? I am trying to hire a squadron of the same ship not buy ships.

A squadron is four ships. Your math skills needs improvement.

Let me spell this out for you....
I am in experimental and I keep it updated.
I hired the first ship that flew into the trading post as a squadron member.
I came back later and bought the second ship. (Class C)
I left the planet and came back to buy the third ship. (Class B)
I left the planet and came back to buy the fourth ship. (Class B)

Not once did the hire option show while buying the three ships. If the option had shown I would have used it, DUH. I even tried the trade it exploit on a planet and in a station and it would still not allow a squadron member with a same name ship.

I will give you some advice. Start with reading ALL the posts before "helping." You need to read and understand the issue before you can offer the right help. If you had read all the posts you would have known your idea was pointless because it had basically already been done three times. Buying the ships, trade attempt on planet, trade attempt in station.

The second is test your solutions out f possible so you KNOW they work and can explain step by step how to do it. Recycling "some guy on You Tube did it" is not help.

Well it seems at this point the topic is dead in the water because it can no longer be done and majority of the people joining the topic are just going to skip reading the topic first and give useless replies.

Knowing its a slippery slope is the first step. Sometimes the save editor is the only way. Use that as your rule and you should avoid any slips.

Well putting my squadron on hold for a bit, see if they allow some better customization in future patches.

Mostly because while it would look cool to have a matching squadron you can not really show it of because basically you "cheated" to do it. Simply because you know if you post a screenshot of you and four wing mates in the same ship SOMEONE is going to ask how you did it.

It is also one of those things that because a save editor can do it that means fewer people beating on their door to get a change in game they can do with a mod.
Krash Megiddo May 2, 2022 @ 7:21am
For my game, I just wanted my own ships in the squadron. 2 guppies and 2 squids. Or 2 exotics and 2 living ships in another save. Its really cool to see my own ships flying with me in formation. Its easier to identify friendlies during the heat of battle this way.

Now that you got me thinking about it, I'll probably go with 4 of the same thing in my next squad. I couldn't care less what other players think of my squadron and its a exercise in frustration and disappointment waiting on HG to work on issues according to my whim.
