Free Freighter?

Somehow I have missed getting a free freighter. I have warped 15 times but have not seen the dialog about getting a freighter for free.

Did this mechanic change?

Also 3 hours of RT. Not positive, but it appears from my experience that doing the Atlas Path mission or 16 mission will temporarily suspend freighters under attack while you complete those missions.

You do have to save the freighter and wait for a call from the captain. At least in my game, that now takes awhile for the game to process. (Like 30 seconds plus)

Every 5 warps you will see pirates attacking a freighter. You have to defeat the pirate ships and supposedly you aren't supposed to hit the freighter with friendly fire. After defeating all pirate ships you will get a message from the freighter captain and then a freighter icon will appear. You have to land on that freighter and go talk to the captain. He will offer you the freighter as a reward.

Hmmm. I have talked to two freighter captains but they have only offered to sell me their freighters, not reward me. One cost 100million+ and the other like 15million or something (I think). I declined both.

I'm on The Purge on Artemis and on 5th Atlas glyph, I think.

If you have talked with them after fighting off the pirates (and receiving no comm by them), then you still should be able to get them for free. For me it told me that the freighter would cost me some millions (which I didn't have at that time), but the buy option was green, not greyed out. So, i choose to click on it. And I got me some freighter. For free.
This works on every new save for me.

it looks like you aint gonna get a free one, but it ends up giving it to you for free. first red flag is when you talk to the captain, the "gimme a reward instead" was missing. just inspect ship. which was a bazillion space monies. but then the green buy button doesn't actually demand the money and you get it.

after that, freighter saving seems to work as expected.

Sounds similar to what i've had as well.

Also been doing the story and progressed past the first portal and I also ran into a bug with the freighter captains not contacting me after defending them.

I believe the reason for this is because the actual mission to defend the freighter doesn't properly activate in the log.
So the captain will neither call you for help nor call you after defeating the hostile ships to offer you a reward.

What I did notice today though was that after defeating the hostile ships attacking the freighter I could still go inside the freighter, talk to the captain and get the freighter for free.

So it only appears to be the comm dialogue and the active quest part of the event that are not working.
You should still be able to get the freighter after saving it like normal.
