(SPOILERS) What's up with biological horrors?
I don't actually know what's up with them, but, if anyone else does and wants to share some spoilers with the rest of us, here's a thread where you can do it 😁

They make good pets if you don't mind wandering thru nature seeing endless dead carcasses along your way. They don't play well with others.

Ever heard of a movie called The Thing? Look up and watch the John Carpenter's version.

You can't really talk about what the big reveal of NMS is without massive spoilers.

The one where a guy ruins a computer because it beat him in a chess game.

I'm sure OP is aware, that's why the thread is marked "(SPOILERS)" and the OP has the following bit:

Pets are useless though....

Someone is definitely beat, though not by a computer.

Word on the street is that they're horrors of a biological nature, but I'm not sure I believe that.

Biological horrors are the more active aspect of the background lore that involves a spreading infestation across planets, ships and space stations that were abandoned. Either before or when the biological horror menace arrived. Terminals in abandoned buildings, and logs in derelict freighters will give you more background.

The creatures seem to spread like a parasitic virus. And seem to be able to "fabricate their own drones". The water seems to be something that denizens of the NMS universe are wary of, with some dialog from NPCs telling the player to either stay away from or to avoid drinking the water. And this parasitic force seems to have infection forms that inhabit both the sea and space. The worms in NMS may actually be tied to them as well.
