It will all come back to you as you go.
Keep your old save, and keep at least one open save spot for the next Expedition, whenever it comes out.
Start a new one though, and get reacquainted with the game, then go back to what you were doing. I still have my original save from release day, and I revisit it from time to time as well.
You can always skip back to your older save if you are not feeling the fun of getting your new character up to a high level. That seems unlikely since most of the fun of the game is gaining slots and capabilities. The exploring part never changes and people either love it or are in the "everything feels the same" camp.
