Completely destroy planet?
Just wondering, would it be possible to completely destroy an entire planet using the terrain manipulator? It'd be time consuming of course, but would it be possible?

I don't think so. At least on one planet where I tried to reach the core, the terrain manipulator just stopped digging altogether.

There is a layer of bedrock preventing you from going too deep, but you could probably get rid of all the normal terrain, it might just respawn though idk.

You mean completely erase one out of existence? Nope. You can't terraform below a certain point, the ground becomes unbreakable.
But I guess you could remove all destroyable ground and only leave the "core" exposed. If would take you quite some time indeed.

That's what I'm thinking, either intentionally or because I doubt the game is really designed to manage and store differential information like that and on such a large scale.

No. Even using a mod that enables the Tool to fire a continuous beam without need for cooling, the planets terrain regenerates too fast.

Just look at how much it takes to do it on just a handful of planets in Space Engineers. SE is one of the only games that does voxels on that scale with that level of graphics.

I didn't realize that the planet regenerated terrain either. It was a random thought that came to me but I thought it'd be interesting to completely wipe out a planet.

I know planets regenerate lost terrain because when I've returned (usually on accident) to ancient ruins that I've blasted the hell out of to find keys and the chest, usually most of the holes have been filled in. Pretty sure once you get outside of "chunk" range, the game will regen terrain to save on memory.

Unless something changed, the game has a list of terrain edits. When you edit the terrain it bumps the oldest terrain edit off the list. This limits the size of save game files.

Unfortunately you cant destroy a planet however there are other games that let you do whatever you want on a Galactic Scale such as Universe Sandbox ²
