can i split stacks of items in half somehow?

the reason i ask is that i currently have above 10k copper i'm trying to refine and i don't want to be sitting here all day pressing S to split it by 10

No, not possible. For a workaround, select the stack, press "S" until the remaining amount is what you need, then drop the selected large stack into an empty slot. Select the original slot now, and it should contain what you need. In essence, you split the stack by moving away what you do NOT need, instead of reducing it to what you need.

yea that's not a workaround for my situation sadly, i want to split stuff in half a few times so that i have 2500 copper in each refiner. i was just hoping there was a better way than mashing S

You can use the mouse scroll wheel while you have the stack selected, but that only does the same thing as hitting S, sadly. At least it'll give your S key a break :P

We really do need a key combination like most games have to split. Usually like hold shift and drag to another slot and it moves half.

The mouse wheel is quite efficient though! Did not know this myself and only found it by accidant, two days ago.

The scroll wheel works really well. Especially if you have the logitech mice that have the button to unlock the scroll wheel and let it spin free.

I'd like to see the default W/S be units of 10, Shift-W/S be be units of 100, and Ctrl-W/S be units of 1. (and mouse scroll wheel be "aliases" for W/S).

I play on PC, not console, so some of the combination-of-keys-for-effect might need some additional thinking to make the function console-capable, as well.

This is a huge pain point for me. It would be great if just key repeat worked (hold down the S or W key and they repeat without having to pound on them).

It does feel as if this game will not add stuff unless it works for both console and PC. For a PC player like me, a lot of items like this plus just me losing interest made be switch to a different game. I might be back if something interesting is added to this game in the future.

I too hate the feeling of wearing down the S key on my keyboard. Glad I stumbled across this thread.

Ya'll's thoughts gave me an idea. Program one of my mouse buttons to rapid-spam 'S' continuously!

Or perhaps better: [(maxStack / 4) / 10 ] times (round to 250) which would produce a quarter stack. Hit it again for each additional quarter stack I want to drop.

EDIT: Follow-up.
One instance of macro press-key S with 0.02s delay on press and release (total 0.04s) , looped 250 times, did the trick. Lower delay reduced efficacy due to over-whelming NMS inputs.

In practice, the rate of transfer appears similar to if NMS had a repeat function when holding down the 'S' key.

The default key to split the stack is the C key. pick up the stack with left-click, while you are holding it, press C to split the stack by 50% each press. It works everywhere you can transfer more than one item. The default keybind is tied to the "Toggle Trade Inventory" bind in the remap controls; why, because Hello Games, that is why.

But hey... try this.

• Hover a stack using a controller, select it and press X to split it in half. Repeat if needed.
  
  
• With keyboard and mouse the same but press the C key.

All the game keys and controller buttons and functions can be found in the game options.

If you play survival mode you can split stacks of 1000 by transferring the stacks to the exosuit where each slot only holds 500.
