How to switch between 3rd and 1st person both on foot and in the ship?

The first person controls of the ship are still terrible. Is there a third person mode?

You can do so by bringing up the Quick Menu with X. From there you change your selection left or right by using Q and E, and select by F or Mouse Click (one or the other of the last should work).

It can be multi-layered and you have to sort of be fast about it, as it doesn't stay up long unless you choose something. You might be able to keep it up longer by holding down X, but I have not found that universally the case.

I don't have a controller, so can't help there. The icon you are looking for from the Quick Menu will look like a Man in a Helmet if on foot, or the back side of a starship if in the ship. Just play with the Quick Menu. Once you find the right icon, you can leave it up and use CTRL-# to assign a Quick Key to it. I have 1 for changing Ship View, and 2 For choosing On Foot View. It is a toggle. So if in 1st Person it switched to 3rd and vice-versa.

Pull up the quick menu (x) and scroll or Q/E to change view. You can also use ctrl + 0-9 to set a hotkey for this so in the future you will be able to just press a number key and not have to go into the quick menu.

Scroll Wheel will also change the selection in the Quick Menu strip left / right. Works better than using Q / E, at least for me. Also, right mouse button backs out one level.
