Galaxy map predefined path?
Is there a meaning to the path shown on the galaxy map when you first aquire the Hyper Drive? Is this the path for a main story line, or can I ignore this and just explore on my own without any drawbacks?

if you look on the upper part of the screen, you should see different filter, the one on the left is the actual road that the map is pointing at.

It can point to; specific resource, quest location, nearest atlas or galaxy center shorter path.

In any case, you can explore as you want, it's just basicaly a GPS system that point at the thing you have selected (or the game preselect for you in tutorial)

The map can show different paths for different quests. And yes, you can glitch many quests if you go wandering around too much.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

There's a few different guide lines you can switch between, for the different missions and points of interest.

The default one just shows you the currently shortest known route to the centre of the galaxy, but you can also get paths to the nearest known ATLAS interface, current mission target, and a couple of other things.

But yes, you can just ignore that and go do whatever you want if you feel like it. The game is all about exploration, after all.

Just don't come back crying that a quest needs you to go back 9999 light years through several blackholes.

Yep, it can be an issue, i suggest to drop a base to systems where you have quest (just a base computer) so you can came back latter on if a quest request it ^^

Once you have a decent cargo it only take like a half hour to cover the galaxy, so it dont really matter endgame ^^

Usually when the quest marker is far enough away, you can reset it to a nearby system. Though not as often as you should be able to.

Also you can portal to a really large number of previous systems.

And how exactly does one "reset it to a nearby system"?

Can you take some particular action to reset it, or are you just saying sometimes it resets on its own?

For most quest, when you "select it" you can scan from space and it ~should connect to a new quest marker in the system or a systeam near you.

But it doesn't work for all quest, only (most) of the main quests. (atlas, the lost traveler and the base building ones)

Thanks a million for all the help.

So, currently I just see "Heart of the Galaxy", not a specific quest. But I'll also keep in mind not to wander off too much for important quests.

Thanks.

Great suggestion.

I was under the impression I'd need a warp gate at my base to be able to get back to it, but I haven't tried just dropping a base computer. I assume you mean that will always leave the system's space station in your warp destination list. I'll have to try that out today.

Does the base computer work as a portal target?

Yep exactly, you can't travel to the base itself without a portal, but the space station of the system keep in your list of portals if you change the filter on space station portal interface :)

Then you can just fly out and reach the base itself if needed ^^

Honestly, the game should just keep all quest systems in the warp list, but I guess that's not the case.

Speaking of quests NOT following you... the Kill Pirates quest seems to do the opposite and continuously follow you. Once I picked that quest up, no matter what system I warped to, some hostile pirates were waiting for me outside the station every time.

I never tried to run away of them, but if you're strugling with the fight, flying to a NPC cargo and docking to it then flying off it should make the cargo turrets fire at the pirates. It will not damage them, but should break appart the pirate formation and make you able to take them down 1v1 ^^
