Horrible KB+M flight controls
I know the KB+M controls have never been great, but flying feels horridly worse now, especially without being able to remap the keyboard. I honestly don't understand why the ship pitch response is so much worse with a mouse than a controller. Other games seem to get it right all the time. Did anyone actually test play this? It's really really bad, and that's too bad because I seriously enjoy 95% of the game... but flying like this is driving me batty. I may have to stop. It's near impossible to control.

Drop the ingame sensitivity. Speed wobble steering is nuts.

change from tethered to static flight controls

This. All of this.

I have it set. It's still horrid to control. Freaking heck, Playing Original Descent wasn't even this bad.

What is this setting and where do I find it? Never heard of it before.

Then plug in a Controller and use it while flying.

I don't use controllers with my PC. My PC is for Mouse and KB games. If I wanted to use a bloody Controller I'd play it on my XBone. I hate this game on XBone. Hence, back to the PC Master Race I go. KB+M all the way.

+1, san's consoles.

I wish they'd let you set the sensitivity of both the X and Y axis rather than just the Y.
Or just let you have them both at the same values. The problem is that the mouse speed left and right is waaaaaay slower than up and down. Flight controls can be done very well with keyboard and mouse, but this game just has stinky controls.

Old post I know, but I completely agree. Just came back to play NMS and forgot about the terrible flight controls. I too am a KB+M player and this flat out sucks. Thanks for the reminder about tethered and static. i seem to recall that and if I remember correctly it was much better without tethering.

Anyway, thanks.

Oh yeah, the flying controls seem abysmal, both tethered and standard. I don't remember it being so bad a few years ago.

But now that I've played a bunch of Star Wars Squadrons I just hate the flying in NMS. It might even be a deal-breaker for me.

I have no idea how it can be so ridiculously bad.

This. All of this.

I find "Locked Normal" or "Locked Inverted" to be more comfortable myself.
(OPTIONS -> Control Options -> Flight Controls)

I personally don't think there's much wrong with these controls. After all, we are flying mostly in a vacuum which has no resistance unlike flying through air so your craft once pushed in a direction slides through the friction-less medium until a jet pushes it in a different direction.

So there's no ongoing resistance to slow you down or for your ship to push up against in space to make a turn whereas in atmosphere a plane uses its wings and the ailerons on the outer rear edges of the wing to channel air flow and create resistance in order to turn in the air which inherently resists any object (in this case a plane) trying to do so.

If you visualise turning with skis on ice it's that kind of situation and movement without the benefit of a hard ice surface against which to dig in and redirect your motion with your poles.

That's why steering feels very sensitive and the motion feels very "swingy".

Also, you can purchase (from the space station Starship Research techs) in-game speed and manoeuvrability upgrades to the Pulse Drive itself which are designed to make handling much smoother and controllable than without.

Also you should notice when you are using the In- Flight Booster ("afterburner") it becomes very difficult (unresponsive) to turn under thrust (the ship quivers and shakes all the while you are applying the Booster), especially within a planet's atmosphere.

After buying and installing the Pulse Drive Upgrades (3 or 4 I think you can have) I have found one way to get used to the turning and spinning sensitivity of the controls is to spend time mining Platinum from those large crystals floating amongst the asteroids in seemingly every system you encounter (Platinum can also either be sold for great prices or refined into Nanites using the Portable Refiner unit making this practice lucrative rather than merely "lost" time).

So, whilst it's not a perfectly realistic system of movement and control it seems to me there is a pretty high degree of realism in the spaceship propulsion and manoeuvrability modelled for KB+M and inclines me toward thinking that many complaints lodged here are due to misunderstandings of the representation rather than bad design and programming by the Devs of the systems in question.

That's just my 5 cents...

Don't forget your flight controls are affected by your WIN 10 PC mouse settings. You can make change in game by making cursor faster/slower in computer settings.
Also I believe flight controls, on any given settings, are different flying close to planet than in space. Your results may vary.

Yeah, I'm more than aware of these things; I've been gaming since my Apple ][+ where we had to mess with dip switches. KB+M controls in this game are still some of the worst I've seen in a long time.
