Need a helping hand from any Nvidia Driver gurus out there.
I've been experiencing Nvidia Driver Installation App failures for years now on my win 7 system. It hasn't been that big of a problem because I learned how to install manually. I d/l the version, run the app, let it extract the driver to my hard drive, then proceed to the failure. At that point, I've always been able to then update manually from the C:\Nvidia\displaydriver\430xxx... folder created by the extraction using the Include Sub Folders check. No problem.

But with 430, the problem I'm having is that after the fail, I see that the driver HASN'T actually been extracted to the hard drive. I can see this by looking at the file explorer. So when I go to do the manual install, it simply finds the current driver I've been using and installs that. Yes, I've tried uninstalling all Nvidia drivers before proceeding.

Why, even when it's showing progress bar of extracting the drivers to the hard drive, is it not really putting them there??? 425 does the same thing. Going from 381 to 385 worked fine, like it always has in the past. Have Nvidia made manual updating unavailable now with the latest drivers when the app fails to install?

Does anybody know of a way I can extract the drivers manually? The d/l is an app, not a zip file, so it doesn't seem like something "extractable"... at least to me, who is not that tech savvy. Am I missing something. Is there a 4xx version that's known to work like the older ones? Please help if you can. I can't play NMS Beyond with 385.

What video card are you using?

GTX 960.

For that matter, could someone tell me what's the oldest Nvidia driver necessary to play Beyond? The error message doesn't specify exactly which driver you need. Maybe I can use one between 385 and 425 that'll work like it used to.

It wont matter. Something is wrong with this update. I've got a GTX1080+i7 and I can't even reach 60fps on the lowest settings.

That would piss me off if I had a card that powerful. I feel your pain.

I suddenly had an issue with driver installation for nvidia after years of no issues and found it to be the files within a temp folder on my C: root drive - once I deleted them i had no issues.

Seriously? I have a 1070 non-ti with a ryzen 2700x and get 90+ on ultra. Something's going on with your system somewhere

86plex, you could try a completely fresh install.

https://www.geforce.com/drivers <- Download the latest driver installer (yes, it extracts the installation files) Make sure C:\NVIDIA is completely gone. This way it extracts all files without having to overwrite any.

Next, download DDU[www.guru3d.com] this will completely clean nvidia drivers from your system. Make sure to run it in safe mode, that'll ensure all nvidia driver files are removed as they won't be in use by the OS.

Run DDU first, then install the nvidia drivers. Hopefully that helps get the latest drivers installed on your system. Sometimes a completely clean install helps.

Interesting. You say "a temp folder."Do you mean the main temp sub folder in the Windows folder, or something a little deeper?

I'll give it a shot tomorrow. Thank you.

no just the main c root folder, there were some .tmp files in there causing the issue. This was windows 10 though. They were preventing the drivers from finding the gfx card

Well, I tried this - ran DDU from safe mode and cleaned everything out. Unfortunately it still didn't work. Same problem... install fails AND it does not create the extraction folder for manual install. Crap... I think I need a new PC. Anyway, thanks for your idea. It was worth a try.

Try changing the extraction directory to somewhere else, like your desktop or something. Shouldn't be an issue, but sounds like there's some problem writing to the drive root.
