The line of thinking that is at work here, is probably not "We want to provide more pet slots. What would be a fine price for them?". Rather, it's probably: "We want more currency sinks that players can use their units and nanites for. Where can we add things that provide a little bit of utility, but not too much, so that the players who can't afford them yet won't get frustrated."
I have 5 companions slot unlocked, all tech at anomaly unlocked, all upgrade S needed for suit and multitools and most for exocrafts and ships, and I now have 25k nanites... in 45 hours of play, mostly done during the very first expedition.
I guess for those who are into pets, they need a reasonable length game loop so the nanite prices probably do that. Not an issue for me because I will never unlock those slots.
As noted, there are so many ways to get mass nanites now quickly it is not really a burden to raise 20K.
Companions become more useful as soon as you start to take care of their progeny... beside being a way of explore a planet without need of fuel and be able to use scanner and visor in the meantime. If correctly sequenced they can be a way to find resources of fight other aggressive animals.
They need a lot of work from HG anyway
Even at 100% helpful I have never had a pet find more than a trivial amount of a common resource.
You can use your visor while riding which is slightly useful if your looking for something. But you can not scan fu
Fauna, flora, and rocks. If you could do that then they would be much more useful.
Well I always looking for something when I explore planets.... sometimes I just go on a pet (maybe a flyingone) and start moving in one direction, often I stumble upon something interesting. There are a lot of things yuo can find on a planet. Useful to find hotspot using survey device too.
Wow they finally increased the number of possible slots from 6?
