Should I upgrade my ship's class or just buy a higher class one?
They use different currencies so I don't know which is cheaper.

Technically, credits are much quicker and easier to acquire than nanites, but that really depends on how you're playing. I'd honestly just wait for the S Class version of the ship you want to land, but RNG can make that a very long and boring wait.

Depends.

If you want an S class version of a specific hull and color then find the an A class and upgrade it or spend X number of hours waiting for the RNG gods to bless you.

If you want an S class of a particular ship arc type (Fighter, Hauler, ect) then go to a few wealthy star systems and keep an eye out while your doing other things.

I'm more than convinced that if you have say 105m, then the RNG (ish) will throw a 110m dream ship at you. Then you will go off and earn 5m never to see that windup again!

I've only once seen and owned my dream ship (several play throughs). It looked like a simple aircraft but it was better than my maxed out exotic is today... So I say upgrades are cool if (as mentioned above by Lindy) you find a sweet A class, which I did with the multi-tool... a mind blowing 50K nanites.

The upgrade method is sure fired and with some mold farming and general play credit accumulation it is probably the best approach.

The seek an S class can be a little harder unless you are okay with the standard exotics. They are expensive to upgrade the slots but you can do that as you have time. The exotics seem to show up (for me) on a fairly regular basis...probably every 24 hours of game play at least.

If you want something in S class outside of the standard ball type exotics it can take forever and a day. I have only found three squid types for sale in over 3700 hours. Seen lots in the anomaly but those are taken.

Unless you are stuck on a particular style, I would vote for the upgrade method.

Units are cheaper than nanites

I've often wondered if this happens. Not just with ships... Like you install a piece if tech and it requires copper. Suddenly copper disappears from every single trade terminal.

Ha for sure that has deja vu. So then you start to document which space stations sell what but somehow the latest update has changed the terminals to not sell it any more?!?!

Recently I was given a nice class S venator freighter by the game gods and yep I fell just short of the asking price of 172mil.

I found a S class wreck a while back. Albeit not the body style I would want I kept it and it’s been a quality ship. However I ended up taking some time and killing a bunch of sentinels to get the nanites to also upgrade the Radiant Pillar, it wasn’t as much of a chore as it might seem.
Rexxer Mar 23, 2022 @ 4:43pm
Wild "S" stats in a ship are always slightly higher than if you upgraded the same ship to S-Class. Probably not enough to make a difference unless you don't have the nanites to upgrade already, in which case you'd not only be wasting more time trying to build up more nanites for an upgrade, but also getting less for the time spent.

Buying a higher class is typically faster than using nanites to upgrade the ships class. Nanites are easy to farm up with the new sentinel update but its really up to you on what you feel is best.

I buy ships based on how they look nowadays. The class means nothing as far as power goes. Sure fighters are more maneuverable, haulers take more hits and explorers jump further, but even a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ shuttle can waste a sentinel freighter if you invest in it.

So, just buy the ship you think looks awesome, then pimp it out.

I had the same, but then I had the idea to sell my entire inventory. I sold literally everything in my backpack and ship, then I called in my freighter and emptied that too, which just got me enough.
