iteration ares, exchange materials
each day this guy asks for rare materials, like graviballs and salvaged data and storm crystals.

i tried giving some of these to the npc and each time imwas rewarded with. . .8 nanobots.
i was like. ."huh, that's a measly reward, maybe i read that wrong?"

i give another one and . . . 8 nanos.

really?! 8?! for a rare item worth 50-150k units on the market?

meanwhile, i handed in my creature scan data to another guy and got 1005 nanos.

i dunno, is there something i'm nit seeing with this guy? like maybe it's random and sometimes you get something good or is it just a balance issue from way back when the gamemfirst came out and they thought nanos would be harder to get?

or is it a late game thing, like in the late game i'll max out my money and have zillions of these rare items and no other way to get rid of them so i'll just trade them in here for a handful of nanos?

Yeah, I don't exchange anything with that clown. I just give planet data now and then.

You can theoretically mass-farm gravitino balls to get some nanites out of Ares, but the reward is still not good enough to make setting up a farm worthwhile imho. There are much better way of obtaining nanites.

Ares also gives you nanites for milestones that you have achieved, which is a nice bonus since you'll get those milestones somewhat automatically if you just keep playing. My guess is that the resource collection task is meant for people who already have everything in abundance, as a way to get some use of a resource that keeps piling up in their storage (selling items for units becomes pointless after you've hit the money cap). But even then, the rewards are so low that I usually just trash surplus resources and get my nanites by other, far more efficient means.

yeah at that point in the game, i would think 8 nanites at a time is kinda worthless, especially since you can only hand over 1 item at a time and keep initiating the dialogue.

maybe it was something they were gonna make better but then they never got around to fixing it?
i mean, the requested item changes each day, so they must have put some thought into it. .

I get between 50 to 500 nanites from Ares when I turn in milestones... giving a specific object gives very few nanites.

I don't go to that Cook guy for the same reason... Each Item, I think is 10 Nanites, and give him Only ONE AT A TIME...?? (I went to him once with 60 Cooked items, and left after I gave him five or six of them)

The cook actually gives a variety of nanites, depending on how well he judges the food and more refined foods get more nanites. Try a stack of refined stews or meat and see how much you get out. Though it's still not worth the brain melting amounts of clicking through dialog for the nanites. But you can get thousands of nanites if you care to farm for food.

i was wondering about the food, because you can "consume" it, but there seems to be no hunger mechanic, unless, is that in "survival" difficulty?

There is no hunger mechanic in the game. Consuming food can give you various buffs though.

It replenishes some stats like health or life support. Some have other effects but I have not seen any place where those effects are collected for review. So other than nanites, high grade food is just more units. For example cooking up some larval cores increases the effective value of them should you want to use them for units instead of nanites.
