Multi tool disappeared
Five bloody years they had to develop this game, the multiplayer is still buggy af, some of the mind bending decisions Hello Games made are beyond me.

My latest gripe: I had an awesome multi tool that I had fully upgraded and wished to keep in my collection, so I find a better multi tool, buy it (add to collection) and THE BLOODY GAME DELETED MY OTHER MULTI TOOL.

So now I am stuck with the new one that I have yet to repair and two other ones that I didn't even know I had in my collection.

The sheer amount of bull excrement in this game after so long is just pathetic.

Give your players an effing warning before you bloody delete their hard earned tools!

You can only have 3, so you bought another and it replaced the current one. It's absolutely an user error.
Just reload a previous save?

Reading is fundamental. Sorry for your loss.
KingQuokka Feb 3, 2022 @ 1:50am
There is zero warning, nothing pops up to indicate to the player that they are about to destroy a tool. Nowhere does the game EVER mention you can only have three tools in your collection. Reading is not the issue here, it is Hello Games' pathetic game design, you do remember the joke this game was upon release right?

Now six years later they still have a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ unstable game on their hands, multiplayer stability is laughable at best and you have nonsensical stuff like items getting deleted without any warning .

Reloading a previous save: I spent ages buying & scrapping ships for upgrades & nanites so no, not doing that.

Have you looked under the couch? Mine rolled under there once.

Ah I guess that's where your humor was lost then.

I understand that some parts of multitool handling aren't explained well, but this is ridiculous. You clicked on a button that reads "Exchange" (instead of "Claim") and had the text "Trade in current multitool" right below. You literally just have to understand basic English to become aware that your current multitool would be gone afterwards, What part of "trade in" was difficult to understand for you?

But anyway. Even if there was a bug, you could just reload to get your old multitool back. Nanites and upgrades are easy to get again.

No, it said 'purchase and add to collection'

*coughs politely*

Guide > Upgrades & Crafting > Buying New Multi-Tools

New Multi-Tools can be purchased in Space Stations and Planetary Outposts. Upgrade your Multi-Tool inventory at a Space Station.

After purchase, your Multi-Tool can be renamed.

Three Multi-Tools can be owned at a time. Trade in your existing Multi-Tool for a discount on new models. Technology will need to be reinstalled in new models.

Different styles of Multi-Tool can dramatically increase your ability to harvest resources, scan discoveries or fight. Multi-Tools can also be found at different base power levels: C, B, A and S-Class.

Some damaged Multi-Tools may be acquired for free. This is an excellent way to acquire high-value technology on a limited budget. The slots in these tools will need to be repaired to restore the device to full capabilities.

Footnote:

If it's not there you can temporarily reveal it and any others you may have missed by exiting the game, launching the game again and loading (or starting) a Creative mode save.

Just FYI.

This is how the screen looks when you still have room for another multitool:

You can test it yourself.

Look, there _is_ of course a small chance that you ran into a bug that no one else has reported within several years (people sometimes do report that their multitool is gone, but they usually just don't know where to find the old one, as that information is somewhat hidden). It's not impossible.

But unless there's some way to reproduce this, it seems much more likely that you either
a) misclicked on the "Exchange" button, or
b) weren't fully focused on the game and habitually clicked on the leftmost green button without noticing that it read "Exchange" (because there no longer was a "Buy" button after you acquired 3 multitools), or
c) actually still have the old multitool in your collection (I suppose you'd have found it by now, but if you're very sure about seeing and clicking a "Buy" button, then you may want to double-check your tool collection).

If you find a way to reproduce the situation that you're reporting (i.e. a "Buy" button appearing while already having 3 multitools, and your current multitool being replaced after clicking it), please tell us how. I spent about 30 minutes trying to do it, and could not. I always only saw the "Buy" button when I had room for another multitool.

Btw, you probably already know this, but just in case - here's how to check your current tool collection:

1. Open the "Quick Menu"
2. Scroll to the far left and select "Utilities"
3. In the submenu, scroll to the far left and select "Swap Multitool"
4. You should now see 1-3 multitools that you can scroll through and select. Depending on the contrast between the tool color and the background they may be hard to see.

How many multitools do you have in that list?

I have made the mistake of not having the correct MT active when exchanging for a new one, resulting in the lose of a good MT. Only habitual manually saving prevented the lose from being permanent. I just reloaded my last manual save and moved on.

Just happened to me as well. There were two multitools in my inventory that I was unaware of - I had looked in that part of the inventory before and only had the one multi that I was using. Very poor game design as far as I am concerned. Why are multi tools restricted to 3? There was a design decision taken by the developers to limit them. You get warnings about potential losses on other items, e.g. loss of cargo when scrapping a space ship. I have just deleted the game, plenty of others out there without this BS.

You need to set shortcuts for each MT via CTRL 1 to 6 and then switch by just pressing keys 1-6, as in other games with weapon selection. Easy...

I have about 6 ot 7 MT on my last save, how is that possible lol?
