No Man's Sky
95% GPU Usage, 10%!! CPU?!
Hey Guys, I am not sure what is going on.

So this is my current System:

i9-9900K
RTX 3090 ASUS TUF
32 GB DDR4 RAM

And I am playing on a 4K LG OLED TV.

I didn't play in a while and fought, let's put the RTX 3090 to the test - As it is the "BFG" as Nvidia calls it and should perform well - and run 4K No Man's Sky with max Settings.

Turned on my loyal RivaTuner and Afterburner for some FPS, CPU/GPU and Memory Stats.

This was my result:
Standing on the Planet, walking around, scanning etc:

CPU : 40C Temp, 10-20% Usage
GPU: 65C Temp, 95% Usage (constant, never changing)
10000MB Memory Usage (Constant, not much changing)
FPS: 80 (when staring into the Distance on a Planet) to 120 (when looking at the ground or sitting in my ship on the ground)

So while the FPS aren't that "bad", I mean 80-120 FPS in 4K on Ultra Settings is nothing to complain about (btw that game with HDR on is gorgeous...), I was very shocked to see that my "inferior" i9-9900k seemed to be completely bored out of its mind by the game, while the "BFG" RTX 3090 was working like a horse. It literally seems like the GPU is bottlenecking my System hard.

Is that to be expected on 4K? Is it utterly useless to even buy a new CPU at this point when gaming 4K - I mean what is even the point? Or is there just something going wrong with the current NMS Patch and the Game bugs out on me?

What are your experiences? Is the CPU Usage really that low? Anyone with a 4K Screen who can look into this to compare with me? Would really appreciate it, since I am bit shocked how easily the RTX 3090 can pushed to its limits.

Not sure, but my guess is the Devs look at the minimum requirements and gernerally program to that level. Being a small team, they probably just draw a line and say we support up to this level. Otherwise they end up trying to support several different enhancements/requirements for various hardware that may be updating all the time.

So, you get some benefit from better hardware, but unlikely to see specific support to maximize your hardware's capabilities.
Those are good numbers. You want your GPU to be at a high %. Most games won't hit your CPU very hard because the majority of processing is done on the GPU.
You can cap your FPS to reduce the GPU, but if it's running unlimited, it will run at 99-100%, and that's really where you want it to be. It's how GPU's are designed to run.

If you were to even consider buying a new CPU, the only path you could really choose would be a Gen 4 AMD. And even then, you aren't going to see an improvement in gaming. It would only be advisable if you do a lot of streaming, video editing, or other CPU-intensive tasks. Most games aren't going to utilize more than 4 physical cores.

In the meantime I tried a couple other games since I was confused by the numbers I saw, and RDR2 also utilized max 30% CPU while hitting 100% GPU. I guess its the 4K Resolution.

Thanks for the replies, was very helpful to get some food of thought. I guess that the results are to be expected and CPUs are simply not THAT important in Gaming on high resolutions, at least if you exceed a certain "quality threshhold" of computing power.

Well, I guess my Mainboard/CPU Upgrade aren't as needed as I thought. Have fun exploring the Universe my friends!
