That said, the portal should operate, it just will take you to the address you put in for the current galaxy...which is not helpful if you want a system in a different galaxy.
That works? You can change galaxies and use a station teleporter to go back to a base in a different galaxy?
I always thought if you changed galaxies everything you left behind was lost forever.
Besides, it only gets too easy AFTER you upgrade your character and ship. The early game is still challenging and that would probably be an issue in permadeath.
I don't even bother with survival any more; I either play normal with my wife, or permadeath by myself; survival is essentially just "normal with extra frustration", whereas permadeath can still get me on the edge of my seat.
Your legs are made of glass in the harder modes so you have to be senior citizen aware until you get some health and shield protections. Most of my deaths have been forgetting the mode and falling from a reasonable height only to discover I am dead.
You also are guaranteed at least one pirate attack in each new system...but you can run when you are fresh to a save and they are no harder than normal mode.

If you died because "the save is too fresh, I'm too weak," then your save is so fresh that it shouldn't take you more than a few minutes to get back where you already are, especially now that you've had a "practice run"; grow some fur and at least pretend you can handle yourself like a proper space anomaly.
If you kill them, you get a standing increase with the local system's controlling race, free chromatic metal, and other valuable loot. Running away from free loot is shameful; you should have your gamer badge pulled.
Pirates really are free loot, too; they're not at all scary, even in small groups. I'm not a pro gamer, but I've noticed a few things about their behavior that might be helpful to you; here's a quick rundown on space combat in No Man's Sky:
Watch the circular indicator on your control panel; if it switches to a timer-looking countdown indicator, move out of any asteroid field you might be in (to give yourself some elbow room) and check your inventory to make sure you have room in your ship to pick up the free goodies. You have a few seconds before the fun breaks loose, so chuck a few items into your exosuit inventory to make sure you can pick up the free loot in your ship.
When the timer finishes counting down, you discover whether you have to chase down the bounty ("WARNING: THREAT DETECTED"), or if the pirates are coming to you ("WARNING: HOSTILE SCAN INITIATED").
If you have to chase down a bounty, simply look at the positional display (it's not exactly a map or radar, but close enough for this purpose) to find the bad guy, point yourself in that direction, line up on the star-shaped indicator (tag it, if you'd like, but it will auto-center anyway so long as it's inside the larger circle in the middle of your screen), then hit your pulse drive to warp to them. You'll fly right past them at high speed, so hit reverse and whip around as fast as you can to line up your shots. I call this maneuver "turn and burn," and it can often end the fight before the bad guy(s) even figure out they're in one.
If you're being scanned, they're coming to you. You can hit your communicator to whine and plead with them to let you give them your lunch money (or speed up the waiting game before they attack you), or you can just wait it out (maybe use this time to move some inventory, like I told you to do earlier).
Watch for the expanding circles in space that indicate where the bad guys will be warping in. Notice that one is red, and the rest are white. Aim for the middle of the red one, and start blasting as soon as you have a targeting reticle. I think the red one is either the leader, or the one with the short-range long-duration beam weapon; they don't often last long enough for me to ask them.
Now, enough strategy; on to tactics!
Move backwards while turning, and notice how much more responsive the ship is to requests to twist and spin when doing so. Find and fire on new targets quickly, even if you're just performing a "spray and pray"; if you can hit them with two consecutive shots, they'll stop shooting at you and start doing barrel rolls in a fruitless attempt to throw off your aim, at which point you can take your time dialing in a better line of fire and anticipating their movements... which is pretty much the opposite of what they intend, but that's because they're dumb.
Burn your current target down, catch the barrels it drops to refresh your shields and get some free stuff, then look for another target. Lather, rinse, and repeat until rewarded with "PIRATES DEFEATED".
I bought this game less than a month ago, and I will happily fight 5 pirates at once in the starting ship, never mind the freighter (which is not a highly maneuverable ship, in case you were wondering) that I'm piloting by the time my save is 2 hours old... which, by the way, is usually purchased with the proceeds from hunting pirates every few minutes, in between asteroid mining for fuel and precious metals. Sometimes, I collect 15 million units' worth of loot (enough to buy a classy freighter) before I even go into the station.
Peeing in your pantaloons because "da big scawy piwates are comin' ta get me" is simply unacceptable. Face your fears, punch the bullies in the mouth, and take their lunch money.
