The shift key on the PC is how you give the spaceship the extra boost in acceleration. W is normal and shift is extra. I don't know what the console equivalence are.
If they catch you doing something they don't like...stop it immediately and walk away from the area.
If you already picked up a wanted level, usually for killing critters in front of them, you need to run away until the timer starts and stops and they forget your transgressions.
If you try to run to space, you just pick up the sentinel ships. Best to just fly around in the lower atmosphere until the heat is off.
To avoid making them mad, do most activities from far away. Mining, breaking down locked doors, killing critters as required, etc. can all be done far enough away that they are attracted to what you did, not you. As long as you don't accidentally hit them they will just keep looking at what your tool is doing with questions.
Aggressive sentinels will attack you on sight. Your best bet is always land near buildings and pop on top of them immediately. They typically will take a very long time to find you. You can use some of the mining techniques to actually herd them where you want them to go.
I have scanned all critters on a planet from the tops of buildings.
The best advice is if you leave them alone, they will leave you alone.
If you are on an aggresive sentinel planet you'll have to have a few movement modules in your exo suit to be able to pull this off.
If all that fails, drop a save beacon, interact with it to save your game, and log off. When you log back in the sentinels should have stopped tracking you.
The exception is if you are in the middle of the armorer's quest. If you are the sentinels will keep coming until you complete the quest.
I do this a lot after breaking down a reinforced door, I immediately rush inside and wait the timer out.
If there is no building nearby, getting in your ship and flying across the planet with out going to space until the timer runs out will help.
sentinels can, absolutely, shoot at you when you are in a building. especially in facilities.
- Enter any planetary building, space station, or freighter and wait out the timer;
- Enter your ship on a planet and fly in the atmosphere until the sentinels give up;
- Run away from the sentinels and stay out of their view until they give up their search;
- Warp out of the system.
If you opt for the third option, tap Q while sprinting, then hold down space quickly afterward to gain a significant speed boost. Just mind the fall damage if you're on survival or permadeath.
As for the last option, warping out of the system may not be possible in combat - but it should be doable in between waves of fighters.
If you're in space, you should fly to the nearest space station, freighter or planetary body.
Sentinels will never give up if you stand and fight them - your only option is to escape. It's usually best to do this before your 'wanted level' gets too high, as every additional level extends the escape timer.
Failing all else, you can reload your most recent save and avoid attracting attention again.
learning about melee boost was the single best thing I ever learned in this game. It makes traversing planets a breeze, ESPECIALLY in super heated storm events. The only time I am running is when my jetpack is recharging.
Especially melee boosting from a high area, just save enough jetpack to suicide burn at the end to avoid killing yourself on impact. Great fun.
