Base screenshot now visible in teleportation terminal
Hi, I've always taken screenshots of my bases using the Base Computer, but they have never appeared in the teleportation terminal, until now. In the "Your Bases" section of the Teleportation Terminal, I can now see the screenshot I took for the last base I built, which is overlooking my first settlement. I've been back to a number of my older bases, and retaken the screenshot, but non of these appear in the Teleportation Terminal.

It would be great if I could see my bases, as I have quite a few now and I generally have to warp through a bunch to find the bases I want to visit as I don't tend to remember the names of them that well. It would be even better if I could see the screenshots of other player bases.

Can anyone else now see at least one screenshot for their bases?

EDIT

A few minutes after posting this, it struck me that maybe I should disable my VPN and see if this changes anything....... and it does, I can now see recent screenshots of my bases. SO now I'm going back to get new screenshots of my other bases.

EDIT

Okay, a little more investigation..........
Nothing to do with VPN. After I close down NMS, let Steam sync stuff to the cloud, relaunch the game, I can now see my recent base screenshots.

This is great, I can now identify my bases by their screenshot!!!
Just need to visit the rest of my bases and take new screenshots and away we go.
Hopefully they will stay permanently.

EDIT

Looks like you don't need to actually take a new screenshot, just re-upload older bases and the screenshot will be applied in the Teleportation Terminal. Save and close down the game after uploading your base(s), close down Steam and let the cloud sync complete, and all is well.

i've been trying to figure out the sequence of steps for this, too... in my Exp4 save, two of my bases have their pictures and the others do not... then i renamed one of my bases slightly and the picture disappeared... i always upload my bases when i make changes to them... after several days, the picture still hasn't returned... steam has been restarted several times, too... we'll see what happens today when i load in... i think we're going to continue playing in our Exp4 save, today, instead of our main one...

i had the screenshot problem on PS4 now after moving to PC it works fine but still have to give my bases ugly names just to identify them because the time of the day in the screenshot changes and when it is night i can't tell which is which, it would be nice if they put a little description box under the name of the base.

you know I thought i had worked it out too, i even posted my thoughts in another thread.

I thought it had to do with making changes so as the base was different from the currently uploaded one then taking a screenshot and uploading after, sadly trying that process again does not seem to work.
Currently i have just under half of my bases with screenshot and some of those should really be redone so as they are not nighttime shots.

I really do wish we all had some definitive way of achieving this, some information from the devs would be great rather than clutching at straws.

Set a base Computer.
Change name.
Take a new screenshot and that will be updated on teleportation terminal.

This is what I do. If I do not change name and or take a new screenshot for the base (have not tested if both or one or the other), it seems not to show the default picture in teleportation terminal. I always get an updated screenshot of the base at the terminal when I change the default base screenshot that comes when you place base computer.

I do not recall if the pic changes for day and night cycles.

Also ensure you are connected to online services (shown in discovery page). Sometimes you may need to reload for for station terminal to update with the base name and new pic.

Thanks Cythal. I do appreciate your input but that sounds like your starting a new base with those instructions "set base computer", any ideas for pre-existing bases ?
Ones where there is no current screenshot in the teleporter.

I also think you need to change name, take screenshot and save at a save point, then they stick. Unless you again change name OR take screenshot but not both.

Sometimes you can go to the teleporter and see that even with these steps they don't stick, but quitting the game and reloading will show them.

I use a PC, consoles could be different. To view the screenshot of your base in teleport terminals do it in this order.

Rename base
Take screenshot
Upload to servers ≤---this is mandatory

So the bases actually have to be uploaded to make the screenshot show in the teleport menu? I've tried everything but uploading.... Since most of my bases are over the 3000 part upload limit I guess I'm SOL...

I have investigated how teleport images are created and saved.

To get the image of the base in the teleport, you need to take a new screenshot in the base computer, the image is saved in the game's save folder cache, you do not need to upload to HG server.
A new image is also created if you just upload.

The quality of the image depends on the circumstances, is it bad weather, or night, it will be so in the teleport image as well.

The picture can be seen in the teleport after the game has been restarted, and if you have several bases, you can take pictures of all of them, before restarting.

The image files that are saved are quite large, and if you have many bases, there can be hundreds of MB of image files.

If you delete bases, or delete save files, the images will still remain, and then have to be deleted manually, and it can probably be quite difficult to see what belongs to what, because it is a huge mess of files in that folder.

And someone wondered what happens if you change the name of the base, then you have to create a new image, the files have the name of the base in their name, the old image file remains in the cache, but is no longer used, to get rid of it, you have to delete it manually through windows.

Good investigation. Expecially about cached images remaining after every rename. I can only say: As expected, HG. Kudos to whoever wrote that code... not.

Great info. Thanks for explaining!

Thank you to all that have had input here, I now have screenshots on 15 odd bases in my teleporter.

The process I can confirm worked for me was to :
- Visit the base and open up the base computer
- Take a new screenshot. I moved the camera a little to get what i wanted in the shot
- I then uploaded the base. Not sure if this is required.
(at this point the images did not show but I continued on to other bases to take more screenshots)
- Restart the game. Of course I made sure to save my game before exiting (jump in and out of my ship)

Now all those screenshots appear for me, I then went and checked my save folder size which is now some 71MB in size
(c:\users\"your login name"\AppData\Roaming\HelloGames\NMS\st_###...\"everything within this folder")

FYI........... I'm on PC on the Steam version. Probably obvious from my EDITs, but FYI anyway.

Another note - bases, whose names contain slashes or other file system reserved characters, won't ever have screenshots. People like to include // or .// in system or base names, since game uses that too, I noticed the screenshot isn't even saved for those bases. It can't be, because ntfs doesn't take e.g. slashes.
