Bookmarking planets you may want to revisit ...
... without placing base computers everywhere, how?

How do people currently do this? Please share your methods.

I tend to use steam overlay and take a screenshot in photo mode, which gives the portal coordinates. For bookmarking particular landmarks, I place a save beacon which will be visible when I revisit the system.

You could use Excel as spreadsheet and adding information , then using a filter to search for the wanted planet

Thanks. I tried excel years ago but did not like that it takes me away from the game window. Might start again at least leave it on a second screen.
try out no mans connect or similar tools

As others above mentioned, or the good ol' pen and paper

Your discoveries page will list the history of your visits, you can set a waypoint on the left visible in the galaxy map if you are close enough, that's often not the case so the entire page is rather useless. You need to have 1 base in each region of the galaxy you have visited where you warp around for about 1000-2000 LY, from there all custom waypoints are visible and you can warp / teleport to them. Even If you play that way you still need external tools or screenshots because stupidly you can only set 1 waypoint and not name it.

Apart from that you only have glyph addresses and beacons, and you can change their color to mark specific things.

From all that we can see that the disco page and the galaxy map are decor and not useful at all.

I use several ways to save information outside of the game. I use an excel spreadsheet for some things, and actually used Visio to design a maze base I'm still working on. But mostly I use screenshots that I right click and add details. Title = Galaxy and subject = Coordinates. I then copy them into a directory tree by subject; Sharship, Critter, Multitool, Resource & Planet.

I can also use OneNote and even make a personal collection. Planet screenshots, interesting landmarks with screenshots and specific planet coordinates, flora and fauna notes for rares that has an interesting anatomy. Haha the scientists in me is speaking. Wish I can do all this in game.

But the wiki has a lot of these covered too. Tried making an organisation page to document my travels in NMS but real life does need attention most of the time.

I recalled using this years ago. A feature that I wished was possible is being able to extract my data as a spreadsheet for backup. It collects location data automatically which is so good.

Thanks for sharing. Well organised. I also write a description on screenshots to add details of the location. Sometimes upload as private or just leave them offline. Using directories, sounds really good, I will try that.

@japp_02
Hoping for an improvement for the discovery page in a later update. Especially with plotting long distance travel. Elite dangerous galaxy map is really good at this.

I still just drop a base computer. Its cheap and quick and it works with the current game system. If its a place I want to return to more than once I build a small base, if not, once I'm done there I pick up the base computer.

FYI: nip over to nexusmods and download
'NMS Collections Backup Restore and Sharing Tool' this little program comes in two versions portable/installable.
It allows you to backup/restore ships/MTs/Pets/Freighters/bases/places and settlements is now in beta.
This along with 'Assistant for NMS' (android app -wiki-like) are great external programs to have close to hand.

NMS Collections Backup Restore and Sharing Tool is really good. Just installed it and now using it. The save Places tab is excellent.

Thank you very much.

I just keep a paper notebook near my PC and write down things of interest. Honestly. other then temporary information like S class addsons at a station not much long term. I will go into one save and note information and then use that information to travel to the same location in another save.

One thing you can do in-game is to put a suffix behind the name and use the names as a way to keep track of interesting systems/planets. I use Trit or Dihy so I know where to go to get frigate fuel supplies.

Between naming, save beacons, and base computers, you really need very little outside information and as with where S class addons are...it is only needed briefly.
