While in your living ship, enter pulse drive. Stay in it for about 20 seconds max.
You are trying to get the game to generate a special RNG event. This is the same thing you do to try to get the game to pop things like derelict freighters, space anomalies, traveling sales ships, etc.
The one you want to happen has always been for me a 'Void Egg' anomaly. Shoot it and it gives you a living ship upgrade item.
As far as I am concerned:
a) You have to be in your living ship in pulse drive. Fly a tech ship and you wont get the special anomaly you are looking for (one of the others might pop, however).
b) Look in uncharted red stars. I dont bother with any other type of star. It has taken me from 1 to 10 stars before I get my 'Void Egg' anomaly (it is a RNG after all).
Once you find a star that gives you a living ship anomaly: Every time you warp to that star the anomaly will occur. So, just warp to it, pulse for 15-20 sec, collect your upgrade, warp to any other star, turn around and warp back to that star, collect another upgrade, etc. Repeat until you want to take a break.
The specific upgrades are random, both in class and type, but they do seem to spread out among the six types you need.
Note: Any living ship upgrade can be 'evolved' through the classes right to class S just by spending some nanites. It is a new option you will see when you mouse over the installed upgrade.
Like tech ship upgrades, they appear to have a 'cluster together' bonus, and you can only add 3 upgrades per type per tab before the game gives you the 'overloaded alert'. Using both the general and the tech tabs, you can add 6 upgrades per type.
- For storage augmentation you equip the living ship and do storage augmentation to your freighter. That is also a broken process that can also be fixed with tricks. Google the method of obtaining freighter storage augments by glitching derelict freighter runs by using the portable refiner. It will be slow, with one augment per derelict run, but it is doable.
- For living ship modules, google a youtube tutorial. There is one system when you get the "right" anomalies every time you pulse, Grind it there, and use a bunch of nanites to upgrade the modules you get to S-class.
Using the above methods I managed to grind a living ship full upgrade in a couple of days.
Fully upgraded the living ship becomes quite decent, but still not as good as the Golden Vector or a Squid.
On the other hand, those upgrades will all fit in the Technology tab, making the living ship perfect for flying through black holes and jumping to other galaxies.
I'm doing the Starbirth mission right now. If storage can't be upgraded, that's ok... the LS won't be exactly my primary ship...
Switching freighters is less of a hassle now that your freighter base transfers, but if you already have an S-class with all slots unlocked and a bunch of good derelict freighter techs, it's probably not worth it.
Honestly I didn't even intend to have a Living Ship. Someone in the Anomaly gave me a Void Egg and I didn't know the mission activated itself after some pulse engine action. Was surprised, but decided to just follow it for the fun. Kinda eager to see what I'll get.
After all the tech upgrades, I have exactly one slot left -- which I'll probably use to put some fancy starship trail.
Worth it.
