Discovered system has been renamed
I discovered a system, I know this because it said so. I renamed all the planets. It's been a few months since I visited it and now I've just been there though the name that comes up in the teleporter screen has never been right (it displays the original name the game gave it) when I go there it'll be the name I gave it - now though I find it has been renamed by someone else, apparently four years before I "discovered" it and this a-hole has renamed some of my planets!

Now I can't name either the system or the planets that have been renamed and it's totally f'ked up my cool names.

I'm about poised to uninstall NMS and abandon it now to be honest.

Am I suppose to upload my discoveries? Because I haven't done any. I assume by doing so it would advertise my systems and other players would come over and screw with my stuff

Like Streaker777 has. F'k him.

You should upload, yes. They recently combined all platforms into one, so whichever player discovered the system and planets first will get to keep their discovery. One of the systems where I have a base was also renamed into something generic because of this change, but all in all it's a good thing that everyone shares the same universe.

I don't want others naming my stuff. It's like someone just walking into my house and taking all my sh*t.

This is my system as it appears in discoveries while in another system. All good.

This is how the name appears in the teleporter, showing game generated old name:

And when I travel to that system, it then tells me it was discovered by someone else and two of the planets have different names:

What would happen if I uploaded this discovery BEFORE teleporting there?

They are not your planets. You don't get ownership of the planets or whatever when you name them. Also if you don't upload the edits and get the nanites for it and someone comes along and gives them names and uploads them. That's your fault.

And finally complaining about a system renamed four years ago seems rather silly.

I mean I get it, it's frustrating when you do all that work and then you re-enter the system and turns out you were trying to edit a previously explored system... This happened to me a few times in Expedition because the upload server kept taking naps.

How would the game servers know if you have renamed a system if you don't upload it?

I don't know how the game works. I only play single player games - never online.

Also, why would someone name two planets, not scan anything while there (presumably Streaker777 landed on them otherwise they wouldn't have been able to name them) and move on without visiting the other ones? Even though Streaker777 has laid claim on two of those planets all the fauna, flora and mineral discoveries are mine (it says so).

Why did the game chose to tell me all this after teleporting to the system and not, you know, in MY discoveries screen?

I've uploaded my discoveries now. Better not happen again.

Its going to happen again. No Man's Sky has been bug ridden since release. I can explain why someone might come into a system and do what you see.

Discovering a planet or system doesn't allow you to claim anything. If you want to claim something you have to put a base computer down and then you get the 300 or so distance units around it and that's it.

When I am system hopping I don't scan everything in all systems usually. I come in and complete my objectives. If I'm doing a delivery mission I go to the planet where the delivery is and make the delivery. Depending on what else I have to do I may or may not scan anything on that planet. When I'm ready to end my play session I upload all discoveries. If I was the first player to discover that system and it has something that I want to rename about that system I may rename it or a planet or 2 in the system. For instance if I find a 24 slot A class multitool in the space station I may add MT24A to the end of the system name when I upload it. If a planet has storm crystals on it I'll add SC to the end of that planet name. If the system has a specific ship design that I may want to come back and try to get later it gets the first initial of the ship type (F, H, E, or X) and another letter or 2 that will remind me what's there when I have time or inclination to go back and get it.

Its not anything malicious its just a different play style. Technically if it was discovered 4 years before you landed there the discovery is actually his and not yours.

Good to know, thanks.

Am I able to name planets with the same names I've used before? Since I don't have anything in this system I may was well remove it from my discoveries and wait until I find another and use the same names (and then upload it before someone else claims it!).

My guess is that the database server is backed up. The is a chance that someone else entered the system and uploaded before you but the data was not refreshed before you entered the system.

Whoever is first in the queue get the name claim.

quite often the game also SAYS it has uploaded stuff when it hasn't . Also : quite often you suddenly cannot travel to bases or stations you have already been to from another station's teleporter ( you can see the stations in recently visted places but cannor travel there ) because you "are not connected " , even if you ARE connected . The online component of the game should never have been added in my opinion because it's bugged 50+% of the time . Everyone by now knows you have to disable multiplayer completely to even have a stable experience ....
Nitefallz Apr 25, 2021 @ 3:34pm
I have followed some from the Nexus to their base and to my surprise, the system and everything else was undiscovered. Later, when I uploaded discovered data, I get a nasty message about stealing their discoveries . :steamsad: I'm sorry!

*edited for spelling.
