Underwater Base
So I finally did one, just wondering if there is any benefit? Is there anything specific that an underwater base is used for?

Not much...you can use it as your "hub" for searching for crashed ships underwater in your sub. You can do that anyway, but it is a little more convenient.

Of all the areas, underwater has just never been built out. Same basic flora and fauna always. Nothing really of value to make exploring worthwhile. No threat, even if you are on an aggressive sentinel world...they just leave you alone if you are underwater now. They used to follow you under water and attack. Also the big predator fish would sometimes be man-eaters.

I hope they give that some love in an update. It is really very weak and makes the water planets kind of a waste of time.

this is what i feared. When I built it I thought, OK, what now?

Really enjoyed this game up to now, but to be honest struggling with where to go now. Guess this is always the issue with sandbox type of games, finding what path you want to go down

building underwater can have an advantage if one likes a "glass&steel" look

the deepwater chamber, unlike the cylindrical room, has glass pannels/walls "pre-installed",
glass panels that even allow the mounting of items like a trade terminal
square deepwater chamber has a glas panel on each of the 4 sides side, while square room has not

both deepwater chambers count as one "building element" that way
while a samilar modified room adds +1 for every wall replaced by a glas panel

(see 3k "building elements" per base/20k elements total limit)

con: can be hard to find a place underwater to build a very high building

For those craving a deeper oceanic experience,

There is one benefit (at least to me) and that is building on planets with really cruddy atmospheres/storms. You will not be subjected to them as the water is basically an environmental buffer.

But in the end is there really a benefit to any base? Once you build out a freighter why would you need a planet-side base at all? Even a manufacturing/resource farm is just something you need visit to collect and nothing more.

can not build a mine on freighter
comparing agriculture on freighter using hydroponic beds and a biodome based agriculture base
base uses a lot more materials and "building" elements while harvesting only takes a fraction of the time using hydroponic beds on freighter as a bonus

148 "in use" biodomes in that base
x 13 plants/biodome= 1924 plants
power usage of base (including "extras"): 8621 kps

same amount of plants on a freighter;
1924/4=481 large hydroponic trays (4 plants/large hydroponic tray)
using 9600 kps

After spending a lot of time gathering stuff to build my underwater base, the moment i built a cylindrical room and i saw all those fishes going through it, i wanted so bad to uninstall this crap.
I guess i'll keep living on my freighter.

It really just depends... I have an underwater base, and it's a great place for ticking off Sentinels from the above-water area, then dropping below water to wait them out. It's also great for harvesting fish-products for food production.

As for Freighter-life, I'm not yet sure if it's a bug or something directly related to basing on a Freighter, but I have not received the plans for the Exocraft Terminal, and have completed every task of every Terminal NPC, and have the mission to construct the terminal for which I have no blueprint.

My Overseer is glad to ask me to take pictures for him. My scientist is glad to give me nanites for data, my Farmer is glad to ask me to find various samples, and my Weapons NPC is always coming up with less effective designs than what I have.

Some of us can go into space, can go into water, but space water is truly terrifying. I had to partake in a Nexus Mission to force me to build underwater. Once I did, I figured I could take on Dreams of the Deep.

There are lots of mysteries under the sea. Plus, if you find a planet with the right underwater look, the biome can be very enjoyable with your sub. Ruins to find, buildings to explore, Hadal Cores to steal.

When you find a planet with Indium, but the entire place is just islands in a vast ocean, pretty much any hotspot you find is going to be in the middle of the water. At that point it's much easier to just build a seabase than try and run stuff to the nearest island - and the base parts look better too, even if you do have to kill the occasional fish that swims inside. =)

This is my take as well. I want at least 1 undersea base. Before I got remembrance/star seed my health was at 3 stars when I built my base. I almost died swimming over a heat vent plant right when it exploded. Abysmal Horrors need different tactics to defeat. Overall the underwater realm is more deadly and fun in different ways than on the land.

The only reason I see to build under water is for looks and fun. What people mentioned here is true, there isn't really a reason at all but recently I found this "harsh blue globe" with huge open under water caves everywhere that kinda tunneled around in all directions. The view this presents when the sun shines is stunning. The water is clear blue and it really looks cool but there is no particular reason to build under water apart from some really nice scenery.

Holy crap that sounds like the best reason for a underwater base! Isn't that why we play this game?

Agreed, just wish I had more to do down there as mentioned in this post.

in a balanced crafting/building system, there would be resources that could ONLY be found/gathered underwater that would be key for building advanced tech items or advanced base building items, such as nuclear power or advanced crafting stations.

alas, our beloved NMS dev are too incompetent to balance their ubiquitous economy systems, let alone another layer of advanced tech.

100% Agreed.

This is the planet I was talking about btw. I don't want to be that guy that brags about something and then doesn't share lol. The planet is nothing special all around, storms are vicious but it's one of those planets with high mountains and water and that makes for a pretty wild combination. It's in Euclid.
