Dunno about the alignment.
There isn't, but using an overhead view with the build camera you can get them fairly well lined up.
And you collect from one point in your production. Easy, peasy.
- You empty all silos at once, that is the default behavior.
- There is no align/snap tool, you have to use the eyeball mark 1.
- Wood panels withe their parallel lines and convenient size make things easier. I didn't think of aligning with the panel's corners but I am totally going to do that from now on.
- Using the build camera and changing the point of view make aligning things a lot easier.
You can also fit 4 extractors side by side on one hot spot and as long as you connect each one to its own separate set of supply depots your set up won't be affected by diminishing returns.
Do terrain edits count as an additional build piece even though - at least in expeditions - the terrain reverts and buries your stuff?
Also, did I understand that putting a vertical panel as a support/separation (presumably removing it later) will make it not count as a terrain edit since the platform ends up floating in air?
Yeah I almost always get this. I build temporary basements where I wire everything up nice and neat (OCD lol) and when the building is done, I run around with the terrain manipulator on the largest setting and spray the whole base floor. In the end there are no terrain edits left. That way all the wires run straight up to where they need to be from underground and look nice and neat.
Wires are supposed to be hidden but in most cases when you visit another base they are visible so I enjoy finding ways to hide them. I might really have OCD come to think about it lol.
Hello Games tried to do too many things with their game. They should have let farming, cooking, and industries out of this game. Now they have too many features to support and a lot of them are in need of polishing.

All floor tiles cause a terrain edit unless you can place it perfectly. You only have a limited amount of terrain edits. Creating unneeded ones can bury things that you want to remain open not related to the one that you are creating there when they are over written because you used up all your terrain edits.
Vertical walls do not cause terrain edits, the pieces snap together which makes them an excellent guide (its like using 2 stakes and a string to create rows in your garden) and after you have used them for alignment purposes you can delete them for aesthetics. You can place the extractors directly on the ground because they do not cause terrain edits.
Edit - You can tell when a floor tile will cause a terrain edit. The build window shows a circle that gives you a visual approximation of how many terrain edits you have remaining as you can see in this screen shot.
