Is there ANY way to restore a Permadeath save?
I just did something colossally stupid and jet boosted too high on a low-atmosphere world and died, losing my Permadeath save. I KNOW that's the point of those saves -- that when you die your save is deleted, but is there ANY way to get it back at all? I don't want to go through another 3 1/2 hours of the tutorial.

That's the point of permadeath, isn't it? No, it's gone. Unless you are quick and have good forensic software to find the deleted file's sectors.

Maybe you are lucky here and there's an archived version of the aforementioned save:

Why does anybody willingly play this mode? It's so obtusely unfair and stacks the odds so high against you. There's giving yourself a challenge, but this is just masochism. I have 630 hours in the game and this was extremely difficult even for me.

Jet boosting was how I killed myself in my first try at PD. Why? For the challenge of course. If you don't want such a high risk game mode then try survival, there death isn't permanent.

Why is the tutorial taking you 3 1/2 hours to complete?

Your permadeath game files are saved in the NMS game directory just like those for any other game mode such as normal. They're in a directory like this:

C:\Users\yourloginID\AppData\Roaming\HelloGames\NMS\st_1234567890123456

where the numerals at the end are a session ID.

They remain there after you quit playing, and are still there the next time you start the game up. Only if you die in a permadeath game are they immediately deleted, before you can do anything to protect them.

So you can periodically back those files up to somewhere else, and after dying in the game you can copy them back into the NMS game directory. You lose all progress after the moment when you saved them, motivating you to save them frequently, but after restoring the files to the NMS game directory you can pick up where you were in the game when you saved them. Someone clever with the Windows task scheduler and batch files could create a process that would periodically save them to somewhere safe, thus minimizing the lost game time.

But then, if you're saving your permadeath game files so that you won't lose progress, why aren't you just playing in survival mode, where NMS doesn't delete the files at all? The two modes play the same.

WARNING: I don't know how this process would be affected if you had the Steam Cloud turned on. You'd have to experiment.

This is the funniest post I have ever read in any forum.

I've never killed myself with a jetpack before. Plasma grenades and the geology cannon OTOH...

Here's an idea. Play the game in normal mode until you know how it all works, and then torture yourself with permadeath.

It's optional... No one forces you to play the mode. It's still to easy in my opinion but I have more experience... As far as getting the save back, anyone who does manual backups should have no issue with it. Just move an old backup save into the directory again and you set.

I'll never play Permadeath again, 26 hours in a glitch killed me. I'm out.

Permadeath is unfair? What? Is not like it is written in the name, right? Oh wait, it is in the name.

Just save your game save files in a different folder before you launch the game to be on the safe side. If you die for some reason in PD, just put those game save files back in Hello Games folder. It does not take a rocket scientist to do.

@Traveler Geldric - that *can't* be your actual Steam ID, can it? I just typed in the consecutive digits 1 through 9 and 0 through 6 to make up a fictitious one. If that is indeed your Steam ID, I apologize.
