Same when I fly, I only fly in first person when I want to enjoy the scenery or need info from the cockpit.
1st person on foot feels more natural to me, especially when interacting with things and 1st person when flying allows you to use the cockpit map/radar.
Only when I am driving Rovers do I play 3rd person.
That being said, I only use first person in a few situations where game issues make third person annoying or unfeasible, such as when switching between normal view and scanner all the time (in third person it changes where you are looking when you stop using the scanner, a very annoying bug) or when I have to use the radar while flying the ship. The rest of the time I always use 3rd person, as I can't really stand playing in 1st person for long periods of time.
(Oh, BTW, another bug report: swapping between 1st and 3rd person view fails whenever you are using the joypad to steer at the time.)
Third person flight gives a much better FOV though. I flip between that and first person pretty regular. Especially on a living ship; those cockpits are claustrophobic.
