Procedual generated diseases. Sometimes you decay slowly, sometimes you shrink, sometimes you turn into a plant, sometimes you get a virus, etc.
Are you scared now?

It's flavor text. It doesn't do anything. Just sell it.

Yeah, I had one of those spooky items in my inventory for a while but nothing happened. I just sold the damn thing yesterday. What would be really cool, though? If there were a Halloween event where it actually does make stuff happen.

xD yea if something actually came to haunt you like a space horror or something on a planet

They're SUPPOSED to cause repeated encounters with a space-monster when you Pulse around - like regular 'curiosities', except you get pulled out of pulsing like with pirates. But it's either not that common, or it's just broken. USED to do it, at least...

so, the actual curse is that there is a small chance that the building stalks you and pulls you out of warp drive without the usual warning, but it doesn't do anything else.

DUDE!
Talk about a NECRO thread.
Why not do some research before bumping an 18 month old thread?

That's the actual curse that causes dead threads to come back.

I wish Your bases get invaded by the green bug things in sacs like on derelict freighters. Or just green jellyfish things 🤷‍♂️

The Space station scrap dealer has the Wriggling Companion for trade or the last Twitch event drop had it too.

I place them all over the Freighter as markers. They are so cool!

It causes your quest to just randomly change on their own causing major confusion and rage

So THATS why HG never seems to revisit old content... Its not a bug, its a feature!
At bit old by now but for anyone still curious:

I did some searching in the wiki, and I read this on the page:

"Terrifying Sample is one of several types of Artifacts and it is a reward for opening Large Artifact Crates found in Ancient Ruins.

They can also be obtained from several varieties of Space Encounters. Keeping this item when obtained in this way can cause the space encounter that awarded it to keep spawning without warning, dropping you out of pulse drive involuntarily."

From what I've gathered from this, the artifact looks like it does nothing when obtained from Ancient Ruins and is essentially just a treasure for a small puzzle, but when obtained during a Space Encounter it seems like it can be used as a tool for repeating that Space Encounter if you found it profitable/enjoyable.

This might explain why so many people find it to do nothing, but why some people might have experienced it triggering some "uncommon occurance".
