Frost Crystal Farming?
I know they require frozen conditions, but can you grow them on your freighter/venator?

Yes, you can also grow them in a biodome or planter indoors on any planet. They only need frozen conditions if you plan to grow them outside.

I believe they can be planted in hydroponics, which can be built onboard the freighter... I know they can be grown in the round greenhouses.

If you are looking for glass, you can also refine Silicate Powder to get it. Use your terrain manipulator to get the silicate powder.

Yes, you can grow them on your freighter. I have quite a few growing on mine atm.

True. Silicate powder per clump of terrain is very low though. It takes quite a while to just sit there and chew through the dirt to get enough glass for the amounts that I'm looking for. I'd rather be able to just passively farm the frost crystal, because they're all you need.

You can also grow frostvine on your freighter/sentinel and freighter/regular.

It's also slow in the refiner where crafting glass is instant.

Granted on both counts. But, if you're trying to begin growing Frostwort in the first place, it's better to convert Powder to Glass than your precious few Frost Crystals, unless you have a surplus of Dioxite and Oxygen to refine into more crystals.
Frost crystals grow in an hour of real time. They are the fastest growing crafting plant in the game. Each time I make a new start I set up a frost crystal farm on the first decent cold planet i find and then build a "green house" up around it so that I'm not out in the weather when I'm harvesting them.

Once you have all the glass you need they are handy for refining into carbon.

Yeah its 40 crystals per glass pane, sure, but with how much you'd get from farming you can make glass way more efficiently, because in the end still having to grind out silicate for glass will take more time in the long run I think. Harvesting one plant seems to usually gives you from 20-40 per plant, right? So if you have several dozen plants, well, there you go...lol.

You get 50 frost crystals from harvesting one plant. So while I'm out exploring I find patches of frost crystals to harvest and mine some dioxite and get some silica powder from doing that. I plant all the frost crystals I find and refine the silica for any glass that i need right away and an hour later I'm rolling in frost crystals. I just have to decide how many more to plant and how much to use to make glass.

The hardest part is harvesting enough dioxite. Plus you can always plant that one plant that gives you Faeciam or whatever its called, along with Gamma Root (flower?), then there ya go, living glass farm haha.

Dioxite is easy. Just find a space station in a wealthy system that sells it. If you are actually at a pointin the game where you are setting up farms you should be able to afford it easily.

1 frost crystal + 1 dioxide -> 2 frost crystal
using a large refiner machine. So you only need to buy enough dioxide. That's much easier than to grow plants inside a greenhouse.

"Easier" if you have a ready source of Dioxite. And, the previous comment about yield is inaccurate: at some point between ExoMech and Desolation, yield was silently re-reverted back to 50-100 per plant, so farming is that much better.
