Although you can view all six ships in situ on a planet surface they do not animate. Perhaps it was decided several pet animations on screen simultaneously would drain fps and so instead of having a collection of pets oddly stationary, it was decided you must dismiss a pet before calling another.
It works very well and you can set short-cut keys with the keyboard control key and using the Quick menu in game. For example toggling bait thrown or commanding a pet or calling the pet menu with a single button press.
Note some pet traits may make some pets wander off more frequently if they have a high Independence percentage figure. All the traits can be 'genetically' modified on a baby pet.
Oh yeah, that's just to call the pet over after it's spawned, it doesn't summon it.
