Distress Beacon Coordinate Data
I want to find crashed/abandoned spaceships, drive them up to the space station and scrap or repair them.

In one or more past sessions, I had found that these Distress Beacon Coordinate Data packs--gained in exchange for Navigational Data with the cartographer on board space stations--were reasonably effective. I seem to recall finding 3 or 4 actual crashed ship beacons in the span of one long play session and with only a couple of annoying "Observatory" or 'Abandoned Building" finds.

Did this change? Seems like a lot more of these are now NOT space craft.

Are certain planets better to use these Distress Beacon packs on than others?

Have noticed the same thing, haven't come across an abandoned ship for some time now but loads of abandoned buildings.

If you build the Nautilus sub and put the scanner in its is very good at finding "Drowned Ships" so its a claimable wreck every time that you get a hit. Of course it only works on water worlds but you come across those easy enough.
If you search Gek systems more chance of finding Haulers which means more cash.

I never bother with those items from the cartographer. It's much faster to warp into a system with an empty planet type and use the signal booster. I usually net three ships in 15 minutes or less. Another hint is not to pulse to the location unless its a long way away. I find many ships crashed while flying toward the marker. Just need to watch the radar in first person while flying.

I saw a Youtube video where the fellow described this method in detail. It seems to be the "preferred" mid-game method, with some sort of more elaborate system using Living Ships as the "high end" method. I guess I'll get a Nautilus running.

It is amazing what you can find just by randomly flying over the planet surface! I'd say some of my best finds were that way. I always from in 3rd person though, I did not realize there was a functional radar in 1st person.
