Killed sitting inside ship???
The other day I had to walk away from the game for a bit, so I entered my ship instead of pausing the game. I took way too long (was like an hour) before I got back to the game. When I finally came back I found I was outside the ship, staring at my grave marker. I was super lucky and must have only died once, so was able to regain my loot, but ... does that make sense?

Can you get killed just sitting in your ship? I have multiplayer turned off, so I wasn't griefed or anything.

I have never ever been killed inside my ship just sitting on a surface, neither a planet or a landing bay. As far as I've seen, your ship is the one safe place in the entire game, with built in air conditioning and life support that keeps all your other bars from draining. You could not have died for any reason, and yet, you did die. I've never ever seen anything like this happen before and I don't know what to tell you. I hope that you can find out what did kill you, because now I'm worried. Something that can kill a player inside a landed ship doesn't sound good.

The only thing that I think can harm your ship is a sentinel walker, but looking at your post, there were no sentinels attacking you at the time you went away. There were no critical exposures either, as the ship handles that. Literally, what killed you and how? That's the mystery afoot.

I've seen some rare worlds that experience a "corruption" when Extreme Storms occur. That can drain the ship shields, cause you to be thrown from your ship and/or end up underground. Very rare, but that would do it.

The only thing I can think of is that I never entered the ship properly. Maybe I didn't hold down E long enough, or was too far away, and walked away from the PC thinking I had boarded, and hadn't. (It was a planet with predators, so I must have gotten mauled.)

But it sounds like you can't die just sitting there -- which had been my experience previously -- so they didn't change anything with the last update to kill you in your ship.

I also was killed in my ship once when I left for a toilet break. When I returned there was an extreme lightning storm, I was standing next to my ship and my grave was in front of me. Evidently I died more than once as my inventory was gone. Everything seemed kind of glitched and I almost died again before I got back in my ship which also started taking damage. I took off and by the time I was above the atmosphere my ships shields were almost completely destroyed. My suit and ship shields are pretty well maxed out so I was quite surprised to see them destroyed so quickly. I was on a frozen world, if I recall correctly, but I don't remember if it was an extreme weather planet. So now storms always put me on edge a bit and I never leave the game running without doing a manual save first if I have to go do something.

Yikes, Chipmonk. If I recall, the planet was relatively peaceful but did have occasional insane storms.

You can get one shot killed inside your ship (or inside your base) by a lightening storm or tornado.

I got insta killed inside a cave during a storm and when respawning it said "killed by electric shock" and then I got killed again instantly "by electric shock" and there where no lightnings at all. There is obviously something bugged, I hardly believe it is intentional getting killed in one second losing all energy & shields without a warning even inside your ship, base or cave.

This is making me want to avoid storm planets. I already hate storms in real life, and now they're doing what I'm afraid of in real life? Game's getting scary now, man.

I actually like this feature very much with lightnings, tornados and that you can be hit by meteors. But I think it is intended that you get a warning before lightning strikes/meteor hits and that you don't get insta killed, at least not in normal mode and definitely not inside buildings or caves. It's definitely a very annoying bug at the moment.

Both lightning and meteor strikes warn before impact by creating a large bulls-eye circle around their soon-to-be point of impact. The central dot grows at a moderate pace and once it reaches the outer ring the strike occurs.

Now I want to add in that Stuka dive-bomber whistle-roar for to go along with that.

Your ship's shield can be drained while flying or landed by storms (one lightning hit drains about 1/6, maybe less) and meteor falls, possibly other extreme weather. I have never been lifted by cyclones from inside ship's cockpit and yesterday I double-checked that while being on one such planet. Cyclone did, however, lift me up from the trading post, the one with 7 landing pads. I was _probably_ inside the safe area and was building a base around it using the remote camera, but suddenly my camera disconnected and I returned to first person view, high above said trading post.

Yeah, it's what I thought. Today I landed on an extreme weather and strange planet and experienced 12 deaths in a row from a lightning strike. I just stepped out of my ship and took two strikes that killed me (one took shields, the other all my health). Couldn't move between first and second strike, I think this could simulate being paralyzed, or might just be a nasty bug. When respawned, I got hit again even before screen fade-in completed and could not move again, then died and this continued until storm ended. Nice, I never thought lightning could hit the same place dozens of times, but whatever. This was on foot.

I then sat in my landed ship being reminded of this very thread, it was in the same spot and waited for the second storm. I didn't have to wait long, came in under 20 seconds! My ship withstood 7 strikes and was rid of 80% of shield and the storm has just begun. I turned outside camera and the game stopped responding. I reckon it could take another 7 to 10 consecutive strikes to kill me in the ship while landed, but I will not test it. I am more than sure that 'Killed sitting inside ship???' is possible in this game. As I near a year with the game, I feel kind of weird.

Also, it may happen, that very aggressive sentinels (that attack on sight) can shoot you down, even in your ship. If it was a planet like this, that might have happened as well.
