Biological Horrors as Pets: How?

Now, I assumed these freaks and monsters that have static looks can't be tamed. I've even tried many times to no avail. However, I saw some guy on the anomaly with one as a pet a few days ago (I forgot about it after closing the game, whoops). It wasn't something that vaguely looked similar either; it was a 1:1 match of the little creeps from derelict freighters. They logged out before I could catch their actual name, as I was too busy trying to verify that it was one of those creatures. I've looked across the web, and everything I read says they can't be tamed, yet I just saw one in the anomaly as some dude's pet.

So, what's the trick here? A save editor that can change the pet? Save file editing with a text editor? Or is there some secret trick to taming them?

It's save file haxing, there's no normal way to do it.

Well that's some haxing I need to learn. I want one of those adorable little cyclops fellas. Time to go hunt how to do that, thanks.

They are most likely using the 'Companion Pet Unlocker' Mod that's available on the Nexusmods site.

I tried that mod, and it did work at first, but the tamed derelict monster didn't enter my companion registry. It effectively disappeared upon entering my ship when leaving. I was able to open one of my eggs, so the slot was empty when I was able to get out. I did milk it, oddly enough, but no luck on keeping it as a pet. The hunt for how to keep it outside of that derelict begins now, unless I'm just stupid and did something wrong somehow.

Definitely keeping that mod for when I find one of those wheels again though. Thanks for pointing me in the direction for that mod!

When I saw that, I tried to kill myself by jumping off one of my frigates. Didn't work. The last thing I remember is a purple red ball with Thomas' face in it when i woke up again.
