Extreme Weather Achievement
I have only one achievement to get - The Sentinel.

Apparently, to get this one you have to wander about being scalded, or frozen, or poisoned or irradiated for about a year and a half. My number is stuck at 28.7 out of 32. I don't know whether that's decades or lifetimes at this point.

I have bathed in all kinds of noxious planets with RED weather titles. They have names like "Frenzied fire tornadoes" and "Face melting sulphurous clouds", or "Fry fly-boy, fry!" or "Call yourself an explorer? How'd you like to be a Popsicle?". That sort of thing.

I've even used the save editor to give myself 100 "hours", but the number stays stuck at 28.7. Is it some kind of mystic signal, like 42 or 333 or 666?

So, having soundly failed to cheat I cavorted about once more in the storm, trouser legs and cravat flapping wildly in the breeze. I destroyed my environment protection so that I had no assistance. I was popping sodium like a crack-head, looking forward to at least seeing the numbers rise.

Nope. 28.7 remains the value.

I turn now to the most helpful and understanding community ever to defend the honour of a maligned and misunderstood reality. I await a champion, or a wizard. Or someone smarter than me, which isn't too much of a challenge, surely?

The only thing that resets the number ( or is supposed to) is death. The number is the highest time achieved per life. I you die it starts the clock over but does not reset the achievement numbers.

When I've done this it was on extreme sentinel planets and I just sat in a building for a while.

When you say "I just sat in a building for a while" do you mean you cowered like a noob in short pants and just let the numbers crank up? Or did you wander about like a hero (as I did) defying the elements whilst chugging yellow powder and taking sentinels down like the rabid dogs they are?

So, that 28.7 is where I died at some point? That's just cruel, frankly. Why do this to innocent players? I love NMS, but sometimes I hate it too!

I got it while living on an extreme radiation planet. Once you max out your hazard protection wandering around in extreme conditions is almost negligible. I just ran around a lot collecting storm crystals. Even getting stuck by lighting a few times in a row does minimal damage, which might be because I have all the hazard protections maxed out.

All you have to do is survive on planets that literally say 'EXTREME' on the screen near your hazard protection. It doesn't even have to be weather related, it can also be security related like the sentinels.

You can even get credit for this just sitting 100% safe at a trading outpost on the planet. I've done it this way multiple times, and just go AFK for a few hours.

I earned mine by afk-ing while standing in my base on an extreme weather planet. There’s no need to be a so called hero and walk around out in the elements. Just don’t get into your ship, stay in your base & watch some YT or whatever.

I think I read on the wiki that 15 minutes equals 1.0 sol days.

I had the issue. It was on my old Survival save that my "Extreme Survival" milestone halts at 25.3 out of 32. I did accomplished all 27 achievements on my old Steam account, in which that achievement you mentioned was done in my later Normal save. I've transferred my 2 saves from that old account. Recently I rolled back my milestones through the save editor to provide me some achievement shortcuts for this account.
I can suggest you these options:
1. Backup and copy paste that save, and on the duplicate try resetting that milestone value to 0, readjust it back to 28.7 if it works.
2. Just set a value of 28.7 on your any other save if you are only to serve that specific goal.

Edit: Yes it's indeed bugged. And the replies above are correct, that you still count towards that achievement even if you are in a safe area. I'm not a coward though.

"Or did you wander about like a hero" <---- I can't tell if this is sarcasm or if you're really a Cheetos stained shirt neckbeard.

Your base has YouTube? How can I get that?

Have you seen my profile pic? I am one handsome, heroic type guy. I mean, I do love Cheetos (except here in Scotland they are called Wotsits, and they come in three flavours) but I'd never let snack related stains persist for any longer than absolutely necessary.

I just keep traveling to new planets and it always clicks over at some point.

You are correct that it can get stalled-especially if you return to an extreme planet you have already been on. For whatever reason, the clock won't move.

To the extent it might be helpful, it feels like the extreme planets with storm crystals, angry critters, and angry sentinels seem to go double-time. Maybe it because I am so busy avoiding groups and gathering crystals the time seems to pass quicker.

I often spend my time on extreme planets. I also frequently blow myself up on abandoned freighters with plasma grenades.

Explains why my milestone stays "stuck" at 3.4 days. Thanks everyone

So, I have to seek out more pain? I have to prostrate myself on the altar of slight discomfort? I already feel slightly annoyed, especially since my main play-through has over 200 hours in it. I haven't been avoiding extreme planets, but I will take your advice and look for crystals and belligerent sentinels.

Why is this achievement so hard?

Your private life is between you and your conscience, but frankly it sounds like you have "issues".

I have never thought it was hard, but I like screwing around on extreme weather planets. I just always play and the achievement just happens at some point.

To the extent there is any remaining challenge left in the old girl, the extreme planets with angry sentinels and critters is about the best there is. You just stay really busy avoiding getting bit, running from sentinels, and recharging your hazard protection....while you seek the faint glow of crystals in the howling winds. They pretty much nailed storms at this point.

You can also earn this achievement while in a low orbit on your freighter if you got that atmosphere glitch thing going. Low orbit as in you summoned the freighter from the surface.
