I'm guessing something in the Expedition update broke it? I have tried everything thus far. Graphics settings do not change it, at first I thought it was VRAM hitting the limit but nope.
Thanks for reminding me of this one, I did make this change a couple days ago (along with disabling Win10 Game Mode) and I looked again, back to 2/2. I wonder if the game would be mad if the file was marked read-only?
It depends if the devs ever need to edit anything in the file, it could cause new updates to fail, probably not worth it, just remember to check :)

I had to set it to read only. Every time i launched the game it reset the values again.
The game was fine with setting it to read only, and i can't imagine that would affect an update but i've no idea. I would have thought that if an update changed that file then a new one would be downloaded, it surely wouldn't try to edit the current one? Or are you saying that if it's read only then an update won't be able to download a new one?
Maybe i should set it back before any updates
I run a 2080 perfectly, no stutter, no frame drops, high/ultra @ 2560x1440 something on your rig is tripping it up.
They changed some stuff related to "performance" [optimizations].
Whenever they have done this in the past, i would get "some" unusual behavior such as, frame hangs and texture and terrain loading lags. The more i played, these symptoms would go away.
This time was no different (so far)... when i first started the Expeditions Update, yeah, lots of the same stuff i described and has mostly gone away, after a about 30 to 40 minutes of playing on planets and in space. Except for this "hang" that was there even from before the update, a transition from planet into space.
... silvergray is right... since there are literally a million-and-one PC hardware configurations and health levels, that also add an additional variable in setups by users AND automatically by certain 3rd party apps, to have task manager initiate automated background tasks, that may become bugged detecting the "intent" of high priority apps such as games, and still run in the background when they are not supposed too.
"Most ALL "reports" of chronic symptoms after updates are exceptions and not the rule. Otherwise the UPROAR would be deafening.
Here are few things you can try, after folks "clean" uninstall and install graphics drivers and sound drivers (if anyone does not know what clean install/uninstall means, Search it)
Have never used that "game experience" thing. Have never loaded it when installing new driver package... (probably most closely held, collaboratively-$-optimized games from Trip-AAA publishers work well with the "experience", but maybe not NMS ?... a>b<a test maybe required to check impact, if any).
In troubleshooting, start by making everything "base-line" and in game settings default"
First and before you try anything... simply go here...
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\No Man's Sky\Binaries\SETTINGS
... "delete" TKGRAPHICSSETTINGS file, start game and play for an hour or so (to let texture and other caches rebuild) with ONLY "defaults" as selected by the game engine. See if symptom diminishes or goes away completely.
Next... geforce stuff...
Go to "Manage 3D Settings" and selects NMS.exe from the list.
Select "Application-controlled", "Use the 3D application setting" and "Off" for as many things as selectable, with the exception for:
- CUDA - GPU's = ALL
- OpenGL rendering GPU = GeForce GTX 1080 Ti (respectively, but dont think this matters with Vulkan ?)
- Power management mode = Prefer maximum performance
- Texture filter - Negative LOD bias = Clamp
- Texture filtering - Quality - High quality
- Threaded optimization - On
- Triple buffering = On
But i would also mention specifically, for glassy smooth frame rate:
(Geforce setting)
- Vertical sync = Use the 3D application setting
- (in game) V-sync = On
- (In game) Frames = 100
- Trip-Buff = On
- Monitor refresh rate = 100 Hz ... (with v-sync on, "always" match Hz with "continuous average FPS" ... meaning, if with v-sync On you get say a number that is always above a 100 fps and rarely dips below 100, set In games frames max to 100 and monitor Hz to 100) (no need for v-sync "off" unless you are playing, twitch-trigger First-person and online shooters).

... glassy smooth 100 FPS, can see object at great detail all the way out unto the horizon. But, if you have afar more powerful machine than my 3 year old I7_x with a 1080i / 1080p... maybe a monitor with 4k + 144hz and higher, why not try stuff on higher settings. Go slow with each new enhancement, to see which one causes FPS stutter and frames to break.
The point being sometime less is more with some things... not EVERY optimization and "need for speed" makes games run and look better. Add "enhancements" in slowly to determine if any one single effect causes dramatic load changes, initiating symptoms.
P.s. I can tell you this update has improved how planet surfaces load into view MASSIVELY... way smoother "screendoor effect". Plus, streaming of texture and objects down on planet, much better.
