Too late. :-( I did not accept the message, but my game was converted anyways because I tried to load a save game that I just did before I got that early end message. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥! :-(

Can confirm cancelling and loading back in which I did thinking it would help does not, it will eventually convert regardless if you click on the confirmation or not.

Must be hit & miss then. I had 8 different people test this before I posted & it worked for all of them. I've also had around another 10 confirmations on facebook from people telling me thanks & that it worked for them.
I was hoping it would work for everyone. Oh well, worth a try for anyone who has it pop up 18/20 are still good odds.

Other people mentioned going into your local files and deleting the auto-save (most recent one), allowing you to load on your last manual save. This only works if you didn't manual save after the popup. This worked for me.

The problem can be fixed easily, if you load the second save file you have (the older one), the only problem is that you have to delete the defective save file (the latest one), before you start the game.

The game always loads the latest save file, and if the game mode is incorrect in this file, it is not possible to change it later in the game by trying to load the second save file. But if you delete the defective file before starting, there will be no problems.

Assumes, however, that you have saved in both auto and manual, and that you have not overwritten them, by continuing to play when the problem arose.

Exactly. Does not work for me because of that. Deleted the later and converted save file, does not help anymore. :-( Even if I try to load the game from the older save file that I still have, it is now a Normal mode save and has the latest time stamp. Sigh. 5 hours and really a good run lost. :-(

I really wished I saw this post before I sunk the last 6 hours into a game only to have it convert to a normal save even before I completed the 1st phase. Please advise when this will be fixed, I won't be playing until it is.

A little correction from my side:
I had to disable the steam cloud save for NMS as well. Makes totally sense, but didn't think about that at first.

Also I made a backup of my NMS save files folder (and structured the backup folder into main save and expeditions save and steam autosave), and then deleted the converted save file AND the steam cloud autosave file as well!

Now, AT LEAST, I got my Expedition save game back and can load it. Only downside is, that I still lost a bit more than an hour of gameplay because that file is so old. But still, I got my Expedition save back, it runs! So I did not lose the complete progress of 5 hours, but only one hour.

Well I must say that "so far" this HAS worked for me. I got the message soon after completing phase one so I did what the OP said to do and so fart I haven't gotten tyhe message again and it's been a couple of hours at least..
Fixed now in patch 3.32

When it came up for me I hit Alt-F4, reloaded the save and I was fine.

Playing in Expeditions mode with multiplayer turned off avoids the following bugs:
- crashes
- inability to pick up portable items
- getting stuck in random menus when talking to aliens or interacting with in-world objects
- expedition ends early
- lag/poor performance

Of course that's par for the course for multiplayer in this game so. Same as it's always been...

How exactly did you do that? I did try to remove the two files with the latest save time, but nothing has changed (i have disable steam cloud long time ago). Still converted into normal

This is not true. I had this bug with multiplayer turned off, still said it ended and turned it into a normal save.
