Given ^^^ that, the preferred ship hunting method is to find the correct color/style ship 1st, then farm the highest class & then upgrade.
Most of us either farmed for it (waiting in the space station or planet-side trade station for a model that you like to land in a higher class), or went on the NMS Coordinates Exchange Redit (YouTube video's as well) and visited the location using a portal and farmed for it there.
Using a friend or another player, a ship can technically be exchanged with you (i.e. the Golden Vector, or living ship). This is done by joining a friend's game and meeting them at a space station. They fly in with the desired ship, sell it to an NPC and fly out with whatever they exchanged it for. You then speak to the NPC and get the desired ship from them.
which can take some players 500 years.
needs to be applied every time you play tho. and doesnt show up to anyone else.
If you take a screen shot of each ship when you get it, you can always go back later and get it again. The screenshots are kind of like having a warehouse of ships that you can't store in your freighter.
Once you get far enough into the game, and your wealth increases, buying storage and upgrading the ships is easy. I also check almost ever space station for the S class upgrade modules and keep two storage boxes full of the specific ones I want.
The only two ships I keep long term are one explorer with very high warp range and one just for going though galaxy centers with tech only in the tech area.

Valid also for freighters, multitools etc ..
