I usually just give up once it gets a little old...there are so many worlds to explore to waste time on one with no results.
Some points that do help:
Some critters only spawn at specific times in certain locations...so day or nite and/or special locations around the planet.
The large predator fish will only spawn in deep water environments and even then they may only show up at certain times of the day or night.
Traveling a large distance, at least a quarter way around the planet seems to be helpful in tracking down those hard to find critters.
At the end of the day, it is like finding some of the nice S class freighters...the RNG may not be in your favor.
They added the ability to read get attributes of each fauna to make it easier to know, how many "exactly" are left on the planet to discover, found during day or night cycle, locations North or South proximal-equator and whether caves, land, sea or air, and of course if it's "Rare".
I think the finding of "the last Rare creature" is by design. Otherwise you would simply land anywhere on the planet, sit and spin to spawn all the animals in one spot in a couple minutes, like on the shore of an ocean, then jump in and scan all the fish, "Done".
i have scanner range maxed-out and the only animals iv'e seen clipping through the surface, are land based animals that get stuck below the perceived bedrock level. Move to another area a short distance away, find and scan ok. But that's not to say they might not do one of those infinity falls.
Again, i think [most of the time] it's just a random game engine "spawn difficulty/rarity" algorithm glitch/bug... but for me, it's a little fishy :)
*I posted over at the Gameplay Discussion MB... this.
One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish, Common Fish... Wut?! ...that's not how that goes
Hands down, the most rare fish on ANY planet...
Common Fish / Always Active

They don't count as "fauna" and, although they have the little red dot, they can't be scanned.
These underground fauna can be a nightmare to find. I only do so by luck. If a planet have these, I give up on trying to find them all.
Yeah, it MIGHT be a spawn rate issue. Whatever the issue, it's no fun like this to me. It's getting really annoying.
Thanks, but it's not about the achievements. It's about me wanting to have everything scanned on my home planet.
It MIGHT be by design, but I have visited two other planets and was able to find ALL the fauna, including those rare underground creatures, just fine. Took me about an hour or so (per planet).
lol. This happened to me very recently. Didn't know it was a thing, thought it was just some amusing isolated bug. Last animal to complete the list and receive 600 nanites... underwater, common, always active, how hard could it be? Oh, boy, I had no idea...
Never found the damn thing.
Thanks! I've got way, way more in-game hours now, and I never found another creature that was that hard to find.
searching for my own impossible-underground-uncommon, and whaddaya know, it was the eyestalks. I found it once I stopped looking in caves. Thanks!
