WHERE can I buy a freighter?

almost every system you warp into, the exception being red systems, will have a couple of different freighters that you can buy when they warp into the system, now if you want an S class freighter that takes time, patience and alot of patience to get

You have to wait for the fleet to jump into the system. As said above, red systems have a lower chance since many are abandoned systems.

You won't start seeing any freighters for sale until you've encountered the first one. (You can turn it down or accept it, but the first one is usually a bit rubbish.) Once you've met one freighter, they'll start showing up regularly and you really can't avoid them. They're a bit obnoxious actually. And they show up where you are anyway - but that's usually near the space station as you might expect. Your step 1 is to at least advance the storyline till freighters start appearing.

No, the fleet spawns outside of the SS, then you board the freighter and go up to the bridge and talk to the captain. It will make you an offer to purchase.

NO.

When you see a fleet jump in land on the freighter and climb the stairs to the bridge. There you will find the captain. Talk to him and offer to buy.

Usually, after a few jumps you will enter the system in the middle of a space battle. Destroy all of the pirate ships. Then talk to the captain, he will offer to give you the freighter for free. Select examine freighter. If it has good stats and slots take it. Other wise decline and jump a few more times until you find another space battle. Rise and repeat until you find a freighter you like.

Reps, to heck with reps. We have no reps. In fact, we don't need reps. We don't have to show you any stinking reps, you... gasp, gasp. I digress, sorry. In NMS we walk up to the owners and buy directly. Same with ships. There's no ship dealership where we walk around and kick the bumpers and say, "i'll take that one!" No no no, you walk up the owner in the parking lot and throw a wad of cash at him and the ship is yours. Reps....

There is a giant hanger bay in the super structure. Land there, walk up stairs, talk to NPC in the front part of the bridge.

Why did they do it this way? Because someone at Hello Games thought it was a good idea.

To re-emphasise, you won't see ANY freighters until you've jumped a few times and advanced the storyline sufficiently. Then freighters arriving will become an everyday occurrence everywhere you go, and you can see about buying one. It's a bit like the hyperdrive. Advance the story, get the blueprint, /then/ you can start jumping. Until then, you're stuck in one star system, and even if you had the cash, not even the NPC ships you meet will have hyperdrives installed. Similarly, freighters have a story trigger too.

NOOOO...

Play for about 2.5 hours and warp to new systems 5 times. You will spawn a freighter battle and get a freighter free after you beat the pirates.

Still hoping that comming them from space instead will become a thing someday. It's not like freighters have different interior layouts and bridges so it matters going inside to see. It's just one of those oldschool things.

There is no freighter dealership that you go to to buy freighters. NONE. Every 5th warp you will get the option to save a freighter from pirates, and after saving a freighter you will be given the chance to buy it.

So at warp 5, 10, 15, 20, etc... to infinity you will face a freighter battle. If you want to check out the freighter, then fight. If not, then blow past the battle and do other stuff.

The same statistical odds that affect high-class ship spawns also affects high-class freighters: if you are in a rich system, you have higher chance of getting an S-class. So on your 4th or (4+nth) warp, just make sure the next galaxy you warp too is a wealthy system to ensure the maximal chance of a good spawn. Also select the lifeform type if you want a particular body type for the freighter.

It's not every fifth warp. I've been travelling 1/4 way across the galaxy and if it was every fifth warp it would have been insanely annoying. There is probably a time-based element as well. 'Every 5th warp or every 2 hours, whichever is most.'

If warps=>5 and TimeSinceLastBattle>2hrs, then start pirate battle.

It used to annoyingly be every 5th warp, but if they added an additional play-length timer, you likely can defeat it by just saving and reloading the game before you start freighter hunting.
