I just started yesterday and I was running for the caves like my life depended on it. Well, it did. Storm and blizzard right from the get-go.

I don't feel this is a game balance issue, more like a reward for perseverance. I have a save where i could have everything, but have almost nothing. Almost no gear, ship sucks, freighter sucks, gun sucks, vehicles are pretty much stock, everything sucks, and it's meant to be that way. I travel light, live frugal, live off the land. Every planet i have to roleplay something, like discover 3 locations, tag five critters, some ♥♥♥♥ like that, and like on the old days, hoof it back to the ship unless i find a spot with a pad or a landing beacon. When i need a bit of hard mode, i hop on that. Love it. In moderation.
Remember that years ago getting basic mats to recharge stuff was much harder. Getting suit upgrades was also much harder, there were none of these procedural things.
There were no super hostile planets like today, though, with storm temps of some 300c or whatever or -100c. Storms would hit like a truck, there barely was any time to think: incoming storm-boom. Now theres like 10 seconds and it ramps up.
Cave crawling was a safe way from going from A to B, collecting plutonium in the way. Also, there was no terrain manipulator, so digging an emergency hole to hide in was not a choice.
I have good memories of those rough days, though. Spending time in a good hidey spot trying to figure out storm frequency, then making a dash for it in between, hoping to get some supplies in the way, because it was as it was.
Those towers of resource stuff as they used to be, actually, were life savers too. Aside caves, it was the only thing we could dig a hole on to hide in.

It's advertised as an exploration game. When does an exploration adventure start out in the middle of nowhere?
I think the developers need to have another meeting, otherwise the joke's on us.
For some reason, this latest iteration is one of the more severe ones.
1. Map your camera to a key (I use "1"). (D-pad down, press CTRL+1 when Camera is highlighted. Works for the other options in that menu also, you can use 1-9.)
2. Press your new Camera key. It pauses the game.
3. Move your camera up in camera mode, and look around for two things.
3a. (1) Yellow glow -- this is sodium-bearing plants, which recharge your hazard protection
3b. (2) A cave. Caves have plants in them which give either sodium or oxygen, and also have the added benefit of mitigating extreme atmospheric hazards. Go there and stock up on sodium and/or oxygen.
I do not know the keyboard/mouse commands for mapping quick keys.
Even in survival/permadeath mode the biggest threat becomes falling too far. (well, probably your own geocannon claims more lives, but that falls under the amazingly dumb category).
true but the way it is working now is just bad. it's a one time experience ok but it is also the first experience. it just does not match the rest of the game where dying is kind of impossible just like you said.
And why is dying kind of impossible later in the game? Because you figured out in the beginning how to survive! Maybe one could argue for a different starter progression, but in every game you gotta start out learning the ropes. One could argue the starting game never matches up with the rest of the game, and it is impossible for it to, because you can't "unlearn" what you've learned. It can never be that way again. It seems kind of illogical to argue otherwise. All game starts are "one-time experiences". It can't really be any other way.
