That being said, I agree with something: people should learn to protect themselves from auto-update. However, Steam should do a better job.
For those interested in the patch info:

I have no idea whether it would work though... I doing some tests about this right now.
Thanks. Never thought of trying that as games nowdays seem to require an internet connection at all times.
That was not necessary at all.
Where do you live? I think the majority in the US have data limits. Also, we tend to have monopolies on cable/internet (at least where I live), so there is no choice of ISPs (unless you consider 30Mbps DSL a choice).
Steam is stupid. We should at least be able to cancel and revert a game back to a playable state. The should do it, because we already can keep playing old versions of our games as long as we launch Steam in "Offline Mode", so why not giving us the ability to cancel updates to real. (Right now, cancelling updates doesn't really "cancel" them.)
Nor is it exclusive to 3rd world countries, some even have better/faster internet than 1st world countries. I've got unlimited data (Australian) but gotta pay extra and it's not overly quick thanks to ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Rupert Murdoch. I've also heard many complaints of states in America that have a rigged duopoly setup that are really just monopolies in disguise.
My area has only 1 broadband ISP and they limit anything under 400 down to 350gb a month. If you want unlimited you have to get the 400 down and since there is no competition in town (yet, but its coming) they charge stupid amounts for just internet.
I pay $140 a month for 400 down and 100 up all thanks to Suddenlink. Service is almost never down but pray you dont need to contact customer service or need a tech come out. Their techs are idiots. Took them 4 visits to find a damaged cable that was just laying in the open in the attic, I found it within 10 mins of looking.
So not everyone has options or good ISP in their location. Im in central Texas and suddenlink is it unless you want DSL or crappy satellite, but in less than 2 years a new company should have fiber up in alot a areas.
