Please give storage containers Auto-Sort
Seems when selecting to put items into containers, it still doesn't just go where another stack has already been started... if this is too difficult to make happen, how about some kind of auto-sort functionality? That way we don't have to sit and dig through each one of the 10 containers to try and figure out whats-where, and would be a huge QOL improvement.

Yup _ i was about to suggest a system - I always rename my storage containers -

1 - Elements
2 - Synthetics
3 - Metals
4 - Agriculture
5 - Alienware
6 - Updgrades
7 - Kit
8 - Data
9 - Steel Plates
0 - Other

Now all I need is for Hello Games to add a "move to..." option so I can select which of those containers an item will be put into. I've stopped moving stuff directly from ships to containers long ago, I always move them into my inventory first, then into the relevant storage and yes, it can take a long time when I have 5 ships full of kit to offload.

Even if it is done by container number - which would probably be the easiest way - this system would do the job nicely.

How about incorporating it into the ship's inventory UI, made of a box with 10 small squares on it, numbered 0-9 and you just drag and drop the item. If a storage container isn't available, its square is shaded out.
There is a "move to" option though, unless I'm not understanding you. There's an auto move which sends items between the suit, ship, exocraft and freighter inventories. Then there's the normal move, which allows you to place the item anywhere you like. (I play on controller, so it's Y for auto send, and A for manual send. Don't know the PC keys.)
If your containers are on your freighter and your freighter is in the system you can get to all your containers that way.
No?

So you hand sort everything alphabetically?
That's what I've been doing, since I finallybgot around to it. It's annoying, but less annoying than having to search through the containers every time.

In an update a few months ago, I found that base building, at least, was automatically pulling from my storage containers, at least with my freighter with the materials teleporter in the system. That eased the problem somewhat.

I suspect that HG hasn't addressed the sorting problem because this is mostly a problem for people who've exited the main gameplay loop.
Maybe I missed it in this thread, but with the Matter Beam installed on your freighter and with the freighter in-system then it's as easy to pick up and move items between your exosuit or ship and the freighter-installed storage units as it is to move things between your exosuit main storage and its cargo section.

Also works for moving things within and among the storage containers. No more running from container to container, shuffling things between containers and your suit. Easy-peasy, now. Definitely fixes my OCD about stuff like having three stacks of Aronium scattered around a container; mouse, drag, drop, done.
I can't believe this feature does not exist. I mean, use mods for this stuff but mods shouldn't be needed for auto sort
yes, thanks! you can send this to zendex btw.
It'd save so much agony going back and forth... even basic logic of stacking like minded items together; Or better yet, have a filter for each container, like in rim world, where you can set the item or item type that is allowed to be in each container.
+++++ omg why when i transfer it does not go into its stack and i end up with small stacks of the same thing? such a process from suit to freighter then to storage its maddening.
please such good we NEED this yes yes all the 9999 stacks and i have one at 9997 FOR WHY? like above give us option to 'move to' whatever we have named not just 'freighter storage' its too much too much indeed.

No - that moves the stuff to any storage container, which is one of the things people are not happy with. The way I suggested would send an item to a specific container of your choice.

It seemes a few ppl slightly misunderstood OP's case here. It's just about sorting anything you send to 'Storage containers' goes into a slot IF IT IS THERE ALREADY, in ANY of the 10 containers.

I myself have everything well sorted within the containers, and named them. But I kept nr.0 mostly free and named it 'Inbox'. All to often I have to sort everthing I send there over to the other 9 containers, which usually has space for all the mats in its the slots I already made my system for them. If only the game could see where the mats already are, and fill up the slots - THEN put in the next available slot - it would save me a lot hard work and swearing.

This is one of the most irritating ever repeating tasks in NMS.

Yeah, I get that. What you want is to send ferrite to "container" and have it automatically stack with the ferrite that's already there whichever container it's in? And also have the manual sort so that you can move items between containers to set up your taxonomy?
As it is, you can choose the container to send the item to if you move it manually. Like I said, I get an insane amount of pleasure from doing it by hand. Almost a sub-game of its own! I'm strange that way.
It's just so time consuming... Like I said before, I often find myself completely avoiding doing certain things just so I don't have to deal with container mayhem.
I'd also add that I'm glad I'm not the only one who wishes this was a thing. Sometimes you never know until you throw it out there like this, and get an idea of who else might be thinking along those lines as well.
